Hi

Looking at possibly needing a new PSU for the following spec.

Q6600 @3.2-3.4
4gig ram
2 HDD's
dvd writer
GT 210 graphics
2 x120mm fan

Just wondering if the OcUK 450W will be plenty for that? - with a small budget in mind.

thx
joe

Considering you overclocked your Q6600, I wouldn't take the risk and cut corner on the PSU.

I wanted to recommend the Corsair CX400W like ricky, but usually it is only best suited for budget builds that usings 45nm dual-core CPU. Q6600 is 65nm thus consume more power, and more so with overclock.

I think you should invest in getting at least something like this for a little more head room:

Corsair CX400W will be more than suitable for this build.
I got nothing against the Corsair CX400W. I actually got two of them one for my mom's and one for my dad's PC :p

It probably is fine with the GT210, but with the OCZ 500W it will provide more flexibility should he decide to change the graphic card to something to consume a bit more power in the future, and it only cost £6 more than the Corsair CX400W.

400W PSU should be able to power all your components + an ATI 5850.

Corsair are slightly better quality than OCZ (and I am unbiased having an OCZ PSU myself)

A decent branded 500w would suit. I have noticed how psu prices have sky rocketed over the last few years, but always if you can get a decent brand, corsair springs to mind.

The Corsair CX400W would be more than enough for the build the OP has.

Here is a review of the PSU:

It can supply 450W easily. The unit is actually underrated.

The OCZ unit can only supply its rated 500W:

Anyway, I am running a Q6600 at around 2.9GHZ,4GB of DDR2, 2 SATA hard disks and a highly overclocked HD4830 off a 400W PSU.

slightly off topic - has anyone actually tried the OCUK PSUs? I mean, i know they're cheap and most likely nasty, but i would have thought OC knew better...

I would have thought CiT would have known better since they make a whole range of products, yet the PSU I foolishly bought from them killed half my hardware.

Hi

Bit of a delay, but just about ready to order now. Looking again, I thought about upping the budget a bit and going for the Coolermaster GX550, which might give a bit more headroom later, especially for a better gfx card (44A on the 12v rail). Just wondering if Coolermaster is a respected brand for their PSU's on here?.

Ok, ditching the Coolermaster idea, and looking at the Antec - seems to get good user reviews but strangely cant find one single site review. Going to use the Corsair option as a solid one for the current spec, if I decide against the Antec. Decisions decisons :(. Making the extra effort as its actually for someone else, and dont want to let them down.
