PSU on it's way out? Ways to test and alternative solutions

Hi all,

I've had an ongoing situation where my computer will not come out of sleep mode. I push the mouse button and keys but nothing happens, sometime my keyboard starts flashing so I know something is happening, but the screen stays blank.

More recently though, it started to do this when I switch the PC on too. The lights all come on, the fans turn but nothing posts and the screen remains blank.

The only way to resolve this is to unplug the PSU from the back, leave for about 10 mins and then try again, 75% of the time it then starts fine. I can use the PC all day running games etc, but the next day when I start it it doesn't work.

Spec;
BeQuiet 850W Modualr PSU
GA-P55A-UD3
i5 760
HD 5850
SSD 60GB
2 x 500GB HD
X-Fi Soundcard
Watercooling pump

It seems pretty likely it's the PSU, but I had a few questions;

1) What's the best way to test the PSU? I'm guessing that as the PC switches on after being unplugged for some time the main supply is OK?

2) Could it possibly be a minor connection issue. ie. SATA power etc that could cause it?

3) If it is the above, could I just not use that 1 connnection on the modular PSU?

I don't really want to spend another £125 on a PSU but I need to get this sorted.

Any advise or questions welcome.

Yeah, I've seen that, but I guess my question is would it specify which specific part of the PSU is faulty, as it's not the main power.

If it was could I just not use that connection?

Don't really want to spend £30 and it doesn't answer the question.

I could spend the £30 on upping the PSU to 100W.

Would it not be easier, and cheaper, with a multimeter?

Sorry for the basic questions, but in the 6 or 7 years on building my own computers this is the 1st issue I've had with a PSU

I've had a fault with a BeQuiet Dark power pro 650 psu in the last couple of weeks.

It's over 18 months old and so I have to deal with BQ in germany - pointless! absolutely painful. I'll be going for a seasonic or corsair next, as i've always done.

I ended up buying a new board before I managed to diagnose psu error! :(

try unplugging all the connectors apart from the mobo and gpu connectors and see if you still have the same issues, then just add your system drive.

So I got a PSU tester off ebay as it's out of stock here and tested the PSU and the 5.5v failed.

So I guess it's a new PSU for me.

Any suggestions for a PSU for the spec above?

More than enough, I used to have crossfire 5850 & watercooled i7 @ 4ghz, this pulled 430w from the mains at full load.

OK bought myself a new 850W XFX PSU (went more so I could future proof it) and installed it into the system.

All was well for several hours and then my wife tried to turn the PC on from sleep mode and blank. Nothing at all.

I disconnected it and tried again. The computer started for about 2 seconds and then died. Tried one more time, got about 1 second this time.

So I diconnected everything and tested it with the PSU tester, again got about 1 second from it and after that, nothing at all. It's completely dead.

I've RMA'd it today so need to order another PSU.
