I am currently using a Corsair Builder Series CX 600W V2 PSU to power a 2500K/R9 290X. I have been using this PSU since December 2011 so 3 years 3 months old.

Every 1-2 weeks the system will with no warning shut itself down. Last night this happened again. About an hour later it happened a second time in the same night and my computer wouldn't power back on. I thought the fuse might have gone or something so I switched to a different power cable, no luck. I tried switching sockets to see if that would do anything and it didn't.

I ended up disconnecting the PSU from the system and testing it separately to see if it powered on and it did. I then plugged all of the cables back into my system and for some strange reason the system powered on as normal, like nothing had ever happened.

Is this a sign that my PSU may be on it's way out? Is it time for an upgrade?

It could very well be on it's way out. The CX600V2 is a poor quality unit with a pathetic 480w on the 12v rail and even then it's only rated for that at a very low 30 degrees C. The 290X is a very power hungry card and the psu may not like being put under so much stress. I would be looking at a quality unit from the likes of Superflower or EVGA in the 550-650w range.
