PSU or whole computer dead?

Afternoon :)

Got back from reading festival monday morning, retrieved my beautiful 1tb samsung drive in its icy box and slotted it into its 5.25" tray, and turned my computer on. Big surprise, the icy box wasn't connecting properly, something i've found common to them so naturally the computer couldnt boot because it couldnt find the hdd.

So, perhaps somewhat impatiently, rather than pressing the reset or even the power button and holding it, i just flicked off the power switch on my psu.

A loud pop and a small flash followed, with everything going off. Naively figured there might be some life in the psu, so unplugged everything, left it for 20 minutes and then tried again. Nothing.

Now, without a spare psu lying around to check, is it likely that the psu has fried everything? Or merely committed suicide and protected the mobo and attached bits from the ensuing surge?

(PSU is the enermax liberty 400w)

Thoughts? :P

Enermax usually have overvolt protection etc. so I think the components are fine.

But you need a new PSU anyway so I would order a new PSU and try it in your system.

Sounds like Enermax put there voltage selection switch of old time instead of power switch... That in wrong position would make PSU blow up when people connected US PSUs to wall in Europe.

Primary capacitors are good candidates for loud noises so yeah, that PSU is very propably dead, fried, kaput...
If you want to be sure you can try to "jumpstart" it without any connected components by shorting green wire to ground from 24pin motherboard's power cable/connector.

PSU sounds deaded to me :( But it looks like you could do with something more powerful for your spec anyway, + by the sounds of it, the rest of the components should hopefully be ok :)

Tried three different cables now. Definitely dead. Not gonna take it apart. Enermax should rma it pretty quickly. I scratched up the warranty sticket some, but its never been taken apart so hopefully they won't kick up a fuss.

If they do though, any suggestions for a replacement psu?

Needs to be 500w minimum (going to uni, will be adding hard drives undoubtedly), preferably modular cabling (but has to be proven long enough to work in an Antec 900), and quiet.

Yep unfortunately that's just what decent PSUs cost. Unlike most other PC components, PSUs maintain a relatively stable cost. So they are always this expensive ;) But it's worth having a decent PSU to feed nice components, and from looking at your sig you may see an increase in performance over your Enermax :) + you might get a better clock if you have more stable rails with the Corsair - look on the brightside lol :D
