hi all,
i will keep the story short.

the system.
Phenom II 965 be
4gb ddr3 1333mhz
asus m4a88t-m
antec 902
wd hdd 500gb
liteon Odd
xfx core edition 650w psu 52a +12v single rail
Asus gtx460 1gb
Windows 7 64bit
17" monitor

I had many problems with the build and took a month to get working after 3 cpu's, 4 motherboards anf 4 sets of memory.

The problem is the psu is arcing after 1 week of using so i have had to send it back (Rma'd). i have now got another psu from a local shop, the problem with this psu is it is EZcool.

It had dual rails 20a on each and a total of 40A +12v rails. 650w total power and a cheap led loud fan.

Can i run my system with this psu, i am running it at the moment without the gtx460 but my onboard hd4250 is no good for anything apart from looking at the net.

I have posted on a few forums and they have game me a few answers but not a yes you can or dont run it with that shed of a psu. it is only going to be running for about 14 days max and if i have to i will still run the games on min settings, i just need the games to have a smooth frame rate and not look like a slide show.

Thanks

Oh dear. Here's a few user reviews from the 'river' company.

For the love of all things holy, don't buy this power supply. Hamsters on running wheels are a more reliable source of power than this.

Just to confirm the above reviewers comments. I did buy this and and I,m sure that it fried my CPU. It did not work from the off. It would turn on for a second then switch its self off. keep well away.

I would agree with the other reviews here. I bought this PSU from a local PC shop for around £30 because I needed one for my 8800GTX. I didn't have much money or know much about PSU's at the time. I looked at the Watts and assumed it would be sufficient. It isn't. At all. When the 8800GTX is in the PSU whines/squeals loudly. The more power the GPU is using the louder the PSU is until it completely shuts down. This is because it has insufficient power for the card.

I was going to say it'd be fine if it can output 40Amps on the 12v rail without too much ripple. Now I'm not so sure.

You do have to take these reviews with a pinch of salt as I'm sure there are loads of people who have bought this PSU and had no trouble and not bothered to post a review. Still, it's a bit worrying don't you think?

^^ Good point. People who have no problems don't usually post reviews!

I had an EZcool 500w PSU which I ended up giving to my brother. It's been in use for 3 years and works fine.

That PSU looks like a better model, so I'm sure it'll run your system fine, especially if its only for 14 days.

i have looked to see if i can fine a site that has this power supply with the details but i cant, i can only find a 650w ezcool with 38a +12v single rail.

can i ask what will happen if it cant run the gtx460 (stupid question i know), i always use xfx or corsair or other well known brands with single rails but this has dual,

The other thing with this power supply it states that it has 2x pci-e connectors and it does but both on the same cable, i have never seen this before. All the power supplys i have had always come with seperate pci-e connectors on their own cable. the total power is 480w on the +12v rails so do they get combined as it states 24a on the +12v rail for the gtx460 and this has 20a on one rail and the same on the other.

I will be keeping it on minimum graphic settings just so i dont put much strain on the psu but mainly playing dawn of war 2 as the new beta for retribution is coming out today.

Don't link to competitors, they're against the forum rules.

Hmm well it should be able to power the 460 enough, although I wouldn't play games on it for too long, just in case.

sorry about that, i will remove.

so the pci-e connectors are ok as the gtx460 requires 2 and this does have 2 but on the same cable, just never seen this before.

Usually it just means the cables can handle the extra power, don't worry about it. Some PSUs have their PCI cables like that.

ok thanks for the info, so can i ask what steps would you take after you put the gpu in the system. would you just put it in and go along with it.

Also how will i know if the psu cant handle the system, will i get errors or will it just go pop and take the systemwith it ,lol

thanks mate, i need the system for today and got the psu from a local shop. my other psu will be back in about 2 weeks max, just wanted to play games even if it was on minimum details, just dont want a slide show which the hd 4250 gives me.

orcvader, in your opinion what would you do would you leave it or try it.

i am assuming that playing a dx9 game on minimum will use less power than playing a dx9 game on ultra.

Personally I wouldn't game on it :p. Maybe the odd light game every now and then, and less playing on minimum detail should be fine.

Dawn of war 2 Isnt a light game, it uses dx9 but very well. I dont want to risk my system going pop but i also want to play this game. maybe i just need to cut my losses and not do it.

on the nvidia website it states that you will need 24a on the +12v rail, that cant be right can it. i have also done a psu calculator and the gtx460 comes in at 127w that seems low too.

Thanks for all your help, i will just have to keep playing dow2 with the onboard graphics, lol.

I wouldn't game on it either. To be honest, I wouldn't want a cheap PSU in my computer. There's too much risk of it going bang and taking out other components with it. I hope the EZcool PSU doesn't give you any problems whilst you're using it.

I'm RMAing my PSU at the moment. In the meantime I'm making do with a Pentium 4 laptop :p:(

are ezcool really that bad, i have never used tham before because of the problems i have heard, just thought they might of sorted some of their problems out over the last few years.

Just for some information what uses the +12v in the systems. also the nvidia website states that this uses 130w maximum, is that on full load, so what can it use just playing games on minimum only using about 30%

Thanks for all your help guys

Bare in mind that 130w is just the GPU, it doesn't include the rest of your system. In total I would imagine it would peak about ~450w under prime/furmark conditions, and maybe ~400w under normal gaming conditions.

ok thanks, the ezcool psu has a total of 480w on the 12v and thats not taking in to account of the efficiency.

are the psu calculators correct.

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

If i get pro it gives me the voltages. what would you think the efficiency of this psu would be. i usually go of at least bronze 80+ but this has nothing.

Thanks again and i am grateful for all your help
