will it be unsafe and dangerous (or will it actually work) if i put an 8 pin connector from PSU into 4 pin connector in motherboard?

Yes, it's a stupid question, but i'm just making sure...

Does you psu not have a 4 pin cpu? or is the 8 pin not a 4+4 at least?

well, it's a dodgy dell one with a 24 pin and a 20 pin for power... from dell xps 720, so yeah, a bit weird. however, with the graphics card i got, there's a molex to 6 pin, and a molex to 8 pin, so i was wondering if i could connect one of those instead.

Do you mean.. connecting a pci-e 8pin to the cpu power? (you've lost me)

if so I'm pretty sure it won't fit in without being forced, and the pin layouts are surely different.. Do not try that.

Also, imo the molex-xxx adapters that come with GPUs should not be used with anything over entry level. What gpu is it?

If it's going in the dell, good luck. Lots of stuff in them is proprietary rubbish and it may not accept some new hardware. The psu is also an epic bag of **** which fried my xps 720 just out of warranty a few years ago.

haha... you should see how i actually fixed that psu in there. Bend the case with heavy duty pliers and then use two long and two short screws :)

Back to the situation: I think you got what i was trying to say. The power supply has:
> 2X 6 pin
> 1X 6 pin female (for some odd reason)
> 1X 20 pin
> 1X 24 pin
> a few molex
> a few HDD ones (can't remember what they're called)
> 1X floppy disk drive one

The motherboard has a 24 pin socket, and a 4 pin socket.

Anyway, i was asking whether i can use a molex to 8 pin adapter that came with my 660Ti (i don't need the cable for the card) to plug the molex on the power supply to the 4 pin socket in the motherboard (ok, i understand your point now. it was even confusing for me to write that...)
