PSU quality?

Yes it would run them but it's a case of how long for. Using powerful components with a weak PSU will surely overload it, even if it is within the maximum wattage.

hmm, ok.

so would it be safe? what i mean by that is that if it did blow in the future, would it take the whole pc with it? i think i read somewhere of this happening, so just thought id ask incase.

any ideas of just how long it would hold?

on a tight budget here so need to save money.

thanks for replies

I wouldn't even try loading a system your talking about with that PSU - the 400W is just what the quoted rails add up to, and I bet it couldn't give anywhere near that 400W it promises.

Obviously, there are exceptions, but it could easily take the rest of your system with it

I wouldn't even buy a psu for what the total cost of the case and psu you are looking at!

Look here for a roundup of "cheap" psus and what happens with them.

And yes, worse case is that when the psu blows it will take out the several expensive computer bits as well.

It shouldn't if built to the ATX spec properly but one area where the cheap psu's cut corners is the protection you get with higher end psus such as over current and over voltage.

Agree with the above comments, I wouldn't dare use such a cheap PSU on nice PC components. Besides, a decent PSU can actually improve performance of the components it's feeding, by feeding them properly ;)

I couldn't agree more with the comments here.

What you are thinking of doing is exactly the same as running a Ferrari on 1* petrol. You simply wouldn't do it.

It would be fine for a MATX board with everyting on board, 1 HDD and one DVD Rom but thats about it.

This:

Would be a much better choice. When I worked at OcUK Tech, we ran the following in these:

Asus A8N-SLi Premium
AMD X2 3800 @ 2.8GHz/ AMD Athlon 64 4000+ @ 3,0GHz
2 Gb GSKILL 3200
Nvidia 7900GTX/ ATi X1900XT
WD 400Gb SATA
Pioneer DVD RW

No disrespect by the way, but as I'm sure everyone posting here will agree...You'll be on an even TIGHTER budget when it goes pop and wipes out your GFX card, HDD etc. :)

Also, looking at your SIG :

// Q6600 @ 3.3Ghz
// Tuniq Tower
// BFG 8800GT OC 512MB
// 2GB Corsair @ 800Mhz
// 150GB WD Raptor
// HX520
// Asus P5K-E
// Antec 300
// n stuff

Surely you already know all this?? :D

ok, on a budget build, and so this looks very inviting.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-029-OK

was just wondering how good the PSU will actually be? i know its not going to be top end because of the price, but would it be capable of running say a 9600GT and a dual core? or a 3850 XT?

sorry if this is in the wrong section.

thank you.

Very inviting? In the same way that a terrorist's birthday party is inviting.

Think about it this way, if the case and power supply costs that price, yet there are power supplies of similar output that cost twice as much as that combo, the generic POS in that can't be good.

Walk right past it and get an Antec NSK series, or 300 and Earthwatts/Corsair power supply combo, if you want great value for money.
