Hi Guys,

I was hoping someone would have a good understanding of PSU to clear up some confusion. I currently have an Antec 480 PSU. It works fine, really pleased.

When i updated my rig from XP2600 Socket A system to the following
AN832-Sli Deluxe Mobo
2GB OCZ Platinium
165 Opty CPU (Which is 110W processor)
7800GT GFX.

the rest of my system stayed the same, 4 hdds etc.

However my electricity consumption at my home as gone through the roof.
I know there have been 2 price increases, but they dont explain my bill jumping from £33 a month to £58.

My question is, how do PSU work? Mine is rated at 480Watts, nearly half a kilowatt. And my rig is on 24/7. Does the PSU use 480Watts all the time its on? even when there are only a few simple programs running in the back ground?

If so, if they use 480Watts at idle and the same under load during a game, which i cant understand, as under load the temps go up, which leads me to think my electricity is being used.
Is there a PSU that is much more efficient or smart? I.E. only puts out what your rig needs at that time?
In other words, is the a newer better more modern PSU that i could buy, that would reduce my electricty bills because the PSU only puts out the current that the system needs, so i would use less electricity.

Hopefully this is making sense. I dont overclock the Opty either, i figured i probably couldnt afford it.

I know the lastest processors are 65nm and not 90nm like mine so use less power, and the next generation are going to be 45nm, so more effecient again.

I was looking at the new Enermax Galaxy 1000, as it seems really modern.

Any comments would be appreciated, thanks.

A 480W PSU will only use the power it needs to, so if you for example had components in your system that only forced the PSU to use up to 380W then the remaining 100W wouldn't be used. When its switched on all day and is idle it will be using much less power than when all the rails on it are loaded like when say for example, gaming. When you are gaming or doing something demanding the power drawn out is much more because the rails on the PSU are loaded.

Overclocking draws out yet more power, so if you are clocking memory modules, CPU and GPU then the amount of power used is going to be much more significant than wihtout those components clocked.

Antec have recently released their Antec Earthwatts PSU. It apparently saves power and is more environmentally friendly etc and the reviews of it are very good, I don't think OcUK stock it though!
