PSU question help needed!

hey guys simple question does the fan spin on a corsair 520w as soon as u switch the power on? (switch the switch on the psu not bootin up pc)

the reason i ask is because ive just received my new powercolour 4870 1gb i installed it taking all safety measures ( earthing myself etc) and when i went to boot it up there was nothing happening, no led on mobo, no spinning of fan on psu i know the power is getting to the psu as ive checked it, so its either psu or mobo

I dont have any other systems or components to check anything

Thanks
Chris

That switch on PSU's rear is just its mainswitch and only enables PSU to provide stand by power to motherboard.

One simple test would be disconnecting PSU from parts and then shorting PS-ON wire to ground from 24pin ATX connector but you would have to be careful when counting pins for finding right one.
(that's why colour coding of wires is used instead of all black ribbon cables)

The fan only spins when the PSU is active, not when it is plugged and shutdown so no.... only when you start the PC with the button at the front.

You may have dislodged the front panel cable as it connects to the board hence disconnecting the power switch. I'd check this first.

It might sound a silly question but did you use the correct 8pin connector.... the mobo one looks similar and can be forced into the card but the wiring is different.

The one to use is a 6/8 pin on the card end and plugs into the PSU.

Thanks for the replies

Right an update, i went out and bought a new psu and fitted it both the 24 and 4 pin connectors. Turned the psu on and the red light came on the mobo as it should showing it has power. Turned the pc on and it double booted as my pc does but the screen never came on it just kept on blinking, also the lights on the back of the mobo that come on when the network cable etc is in didnt `come on so im thinkin that theres a mobo problem

any ideas whats wrong now??

Thanks chris
