Hi all great to finally join in on the forums, now my question is I recently got a pre-built PC and added my own parts as below

i5 4690 3.5GHz - 8GB Ram - 1TB WD Caviar Green - DVD burner

it just has the CPU stock fan and stock case fan for now as I only really use it as a HTPC and for Adobe products but I decided a mid range GPU would help the system and let me do some gaming in the future and I saw the
*Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Boost OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card*
on overclockers for £130 after considering the GTX 750 Ti , my question is I can tell the psu that came with the PC is a generic 500w but I have the Corsair HX450w and was thinking if I replaced the generic one with this would it be enough to power the components including new GPU it seems the Corsair has the required 2 6 pin connectors and 33 amps on the +12V if this is what you should be looking at.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

That would be a excellent move. The HX450 is a much better psu than any generic rubbish. I doubt if that generic "500w" unit will output half it's stated power. The HX450 is a Seasonic built unit with 396w on the 12v rail so loads of power for your planned gpu plus more left over.

What case do you have? One thing I would keep a eye on though is temps especially if you don't have good airflow in the case. Adding the 270X is going to give some extra heat in the case and Haswell cpu's are quite hot running at the best of times. I know you have the non-K version so no overclocking but it's still under the stock cooler which are not great. Just keep a eye on cpu and gpu temps (when you get it) and if the cpu starts getting a bit toasty £15-20 on a half decent cooler would be money well spent.

Thanks for the reply the case is like the psu just a generic one although it does have a side mesh where I could probably add an extra fan, I am not a big gamer but figured if I was going to get a card it was better maybe better to pay the little extra and get the 270X over the GTX 750 Ti chances are the new Resident Evil is a game I will play but not many more.

The HX450 will handle a 270x, no problem. Just make sure you provide adequate cooling to the GPU. If the case has hard drives in the front, make sure you get a good airflow fan to overcome the restriction.

Thanks for all the help I opened the case to get a better look and I should have checked earlier it seems it came with just the Intel Delta CPU cooler and no fans so I am probably going to need to add some. what would be the best setup I have the H81M-PLUS motherboard so need to check how many fans I can add.

The number of fans you have is decided by how many places on the case they are able to be installed. Being a generic case I expect it only has a 80mm or if very lucky a 120mm exhaust fan. Do you know the actual make and model of the case?

Measure the size between the fan mount screw holes (it will be a square). If it is:
- 105mm - then this is a 120mm fan mount
- 83mm - then this is a 92mm fan mount
- 72mm - then this is a 80mm fan mount

These are the most common dimensions out there.
