Currently building (well, thinking about it mostly...:D) a basic server for music streaming and Torrenting.
I'm looking to go as low budget and low powered as possible to help save the leccy bills.

Originally I was going to buy maybe an Intel atom pc or the like, but on thinking about it, I figured it would take a couple of years in electricity savings to recoup the cost of shelling out for an Atom Pc (about £200ish). So Im not going down that route anymore. Also I was looking at NAS drives, but general opinion is that they arent a match for a cheap basic PC, so thats out too.

Plus, I have a Core2 Duo and Asrock Motherboard already lying around which I can use to build a basic server. Savings made here will help fund whats still required, a 1TB hard drive, a stick of ram and a case/psu.
I'll be underclocking the CPU too, save as much power as posible.

So, I've a couple of questions if you dont mind guys?

*1. Power consumption is still an issue, and it was only up till recently I discovered that a PSU only draws the power it needs to keep the components working - so a 450W wouldn't use 450 watts all the time.
So im not getting my knickers in a twist anymore about finding 45W PSUs and the like:)

So I guess I'm looking for recommendations cheap, lowest wattage PSU (its only for a server so whatever works really..), case and a stick of ram.
Cheap as chips if its possible, I'm shelling out for other kit at the same time and I need to save some money on the server side of things.

*2. OUT OF CURIOSITY...
I have a VERY old PC kicking about, a P3 750Mhz which had Win98 on it.
Does this have the horsepower to run a server? The PSU is only 200watts so chances are it MIGHT be cheaper to run than the first option?

On the other hand, it might be more of a ball-acher, old chipset, no SATA ports etc etc.

A lot of questions, thanks for any replies!

For #1 I'd probably pick something like the Antec NSK 4480 as it offers a decent PSU and case at a reasonable price. For Ram this OCZ 2gb kit would do fine. I don't know if you need a graphics card but any passively cooled basic option would do here.

#2 It depends what sort of server you are talking about, there are a few Linux options that would be quite happy on that sort of specification I believe but if you want to run Windows then I'd go with the Core2Duo option.

For what you want to do (which is very basic) the P3 would be fine. Obviously all you really need is a lot of hard disk space.

You can get a dirt cheap SATA PCI card for <£10 so this may be the cheaper option as well.

For an operating system I'd try and get an XP licence. There's no need for Server 2003 / 2008 as you're not doing enough to warrant that.
