Hi guys,

Firstly, hello! been reading these boards for a while but this is my first post ;)

I'm looking to put a HTPC together soon, i've not fully decided on the spec yet but it will most likely include:

Antec Fusion
AMD X2
1 HDD
1 Blu-Ray Drive
ATI 4600 Series graphics card

Any suggestions for a decent PSU? I don't think it'll be too power hungry, so I would imagine something in the region of 300-500w should do, only other requirement is that it must be quiet.

Cheers!

is the pc just simply for media playback?

if so drop the 4600 of a 3450 if 7.1 surround sound over HDMI isnt needed, or even look at getting an MB with onboard HD decoding such as the 780g or nvidia 8200. these i think only support 2.0 channel audio over HDMI. the 3450 has 5.1 channel audio over HDMI

for the PSU, maybe look at the VX450.

Thanks very much for your PSU suggestion, the only thing other than media that it might be used for is web browsing.

I was originally looking at just using the onboard graphics on a 780g board before I read about the HDMI limitations, however at the moment I only need 5.1 over HDMI, so I'll take a look at your suggestion of the 3450 which might save a bit of money, thanks!

Any more opinions are, of course, welcome :)

I agree with jak731 in regards to the PSU, running the 520w & 620w Corsair and have no complaints.

I did a little research a few weeks back and decided to hold off for the Nvidia 9400 boards to drop - which they now have.

For me it was either a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard (which has a fantastic reputation) coupled with an AMD 4850e or a 9400 board with an Intel E5200. OcUK currently has a DFI Lan Party 9400 LPJRGF9400-T2RS in stock but I consider it a little too pricey at the moment and I'll wait until the price of these 9400 boards drops a little before buying.

For low power consumption, noise and heat (fewer fans) you really need integrated graphics. I'll also recommend a Corsair PSU; the VX 450W is fantastic but get a HX520W if you must have modular.

Thanks for all the replies guys, based on the number of recommendations I think i'll probably grab a VX450.

if you want to keep it quiet then drop the 4600 for a 4350 or 4550 series passive card, which will both decode HD content so the cpu is barely troubled

a good 300w is more than enough, the suggested supplies though perfectly fine are not particuarly well suited to a htpc destop case, look for tips on silentpcreview, check fan locations will suit the case

spend money on a goood quiet cooler to keep that x2 quiet

I'm running a Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H board, E5200 @ Stock, 2x2Gb OCZ Gold 800Mhz RAM, 1Tb Green Power WD Sata Drive, Pioneer BDR-202BK Bluray-DVD/R combo and 2x Noctua S12 fans in an Antec Fusion Remote fitted with an Antec Earthpower 380w with no problems what so ever.
