Hi

My trusty (but old) Tagan 480W PSU died a death last week. I had ordered the **B Grade** Antec HCG Gold 850W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply, however, this I'm told is out of stock now. I'm simply looking for something with a bit of head room, quiet and modular. The spec of the PC it will be powering is as per the below.

  • AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition
  • DFI LANPARTY DK 790FXB-M3H5
  • Sapphire Radeon RX 480 8192MB
  • 8GB (4x2GB) CorsairTwinX DDR3 PC3-10600
  • 640GB Western Digital WD6401AALS *2 RAID 0
  • Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache * 2 RAID 1 (storage)

850w is complete overkill for that spec. I was running the same phenom processor in a system with 8 hard drives a raid controller, sas expander and quadro gpu on a 550w unit with plenty of headroom. It also powered an fx8320 for a while too.

For reference, I also run a threadripper, Vega 56, gtx 780, 10gig nic, pro audio interface, video capture card, 3 hard disks and 3 ssds off a 750w seasonic supply without any issues.

I’d go for a 650w seasonic focus plus as it’s a quality unit, with high efficiency and a 10 year warranty. There is a platinum efficiency version for just over £100 but it’s out of stock.

If you want quiet, look at BeQuiet PSU, I've installed about 5 of them now. From their entry model to the darkpower range, all well built.

Also, ditch your hard drives for SSD. Hard drives are too noisy. Far slower seek time than an SSD too, best upgrade in the last 15 years of PC tech.
