Am I right in thinking 1000w is recommended for 290P/290X crossfire?
What is the minimum you can comfortably get away with?

Bare minimum, a decent 750W. Honestly though i would consider no lower than a good, 850W unit. 1000W recommended. I did survive fine for a few months on a 750W gold psu with 290P crossfire.
Are you considering joining the 290 crossfire club Rofls?
Well I've got an AX750 which if I remember rightly is gold rated but it is going to be pushing it a bit then.
Depends whether I can justify 2nd card and new psu!
If you go 290P crossfire you'll be fine and have a bit of headroom if you run stock clocks. That's what i did. You can at least see how it goes then upgrade the psu at a later date, like i did i suppose.
I hit 1275W with a 2700k and 2x290P's on sleeping dogs benchmark sequence.

At that power draw they were probably running on-fire not crossfire
Was that on the last scene going down the stairs?
