How big a role does the PSU have in how good you can get an overclock?

Because it should considering that its the volt you put into a chip that make it stable.

And so far on both my old an new mobos i got quite far with my overclocks without having to up too much voltages but then when i did everything came to a halt.

More about stability of the rails, if your rails are flakey, you voltages can fluctuate and your overclock becomes unstable.

Like above, if your psu isn't build to high standards (like many cheap non branded psus) then when load is put on the power supply then the rails may droop/fluctuate to such an extent, causing a failed overclock or your system might restart.

When selecting a psu always look for reviews, as they will always show much the rails fluctuate when idle and under load.

Hope that helps;)
