Hi all

PC was working fine last night. Shut it down via remote desktop and when I came to start the pc up this morning it was totally dead.....no lights even on the motherboard (an old DFI lanparty Ultra B) I tried to swap the kettle lead just in case the fuse had gone and bang the psu had sparks comming out of the fan bit :o I guess my psu has blown. It serves me right for getting a cheapo. I just hope it hasnt taken the motherboard with it so will try a test psu first ........however Im looking to get a new psu now......can anyone recommend me one......Ive been out of this scene for a while so have no idea if these new sli compliant ones also work with normal old atx notherboards also.

I will be looking to upgrade everthing in a few months (if the missus allows it) so want something reasonably future proof and would also like a modular psu if possible

Any recomendation for a decent psu for £70 ish tops?

Enermax Liberty.

Hiper are too unreliable when it comes to getting PSU's, 50/50 you get one that'l die or be dead.

And yes i'm talking from experience.

I have not heard from friends, family or anyone i know recieving a duff Enermax. I don't assume they never fail, i just think the success rate is higher.

Alternatively, theres plenty of other good brands to choose from Tagan, Seasonic, FSP and of course Antec.

Yep, Seasonic are killer. They make just about the only PSU's that deliver proper amps at the stated maximum voltage. Pretty much ALL other manufacturers either dropo below acceptable amps and/or overheat to stupid levels.

I'm pretty sure FSP are just as good and a bit cheaper to boot. Enermax is sort of a compromise between price\performance, as rails tend to fluctuate a little more under load in today's systems, or drop a bit below rated values.

Cant believe that.... That is what happened to my old psy aswel, was working fine the night before and when I turned it on in the morning, no power. So I tried a diff power lead, and bang.

So bought a new psu and computer was fine, the old psu didnt cause any damage.

I'd go for Seasonic or Enermax myself. I had two Antecs die within weeks of each other in different systems (one tried a pyrotechnic display and blew off a chunk of capacitor, and the other decided to start undervolting). Won't be going there again.

Hopefully your system is OK, but the bad news is that cheapo PSUs tend to like taking other hardware with them when they give up.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys

Will have a look around later and go with the suggested makes......thats if the pc is still working

FSP/Sparkle/Fortron Source, used nearly 1000 (Yes, one thousand) of them in the last few years, miniscule return rate. Usually cheaper then "Big" Brands, minimal performance difference. They power all my own rigs also (Ranginf from 350-700W)
