Just thrown an athlon X3 system together for the mrs and used my old-ish cooler master 700w PSU that was running my current machine fine until a couple of weeks ago,

However now its in the new computer when its not on load it ticks, put it under any load eg intel burn test and it goes away?

think its still under warranty so RMA or am i missing something?

Seems as if it's a common issue:

We have seen that the CPU power saving features in the BIOS can cause the PSU to emit the noise. Try disabling these features to see if there is any improvement. C1E and EIST (Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology) are two examples of power saving settings, but your motherboard manufacturer should be able to tell you specifically which features your board supports.

Happened with my PSU when the load would drop to less than 40 watts until I turned off C1E. Since then I have a 4870X2 so the days of using 40 watts on idle are long gone :D

hmm i think your right here, when the cd rom spins up goes away as well, thanks for you help might just invest in a cheap GPU for it!
