PSU to GPU cable arrangement.

Hello folks

I've searched a bit on the forum and I think I've gleaned the answer but I just want to make absolutely sure so as to hopefully avoid explosions!

My PSU is a SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 850W.
My GPU is a MSI Geforce GTX 980Ti Gaming 6gb.

At the moment I have just one cable connecting the PSU to the GPU - a splitter cable so both 8pin sockets are filled on the card.

Would it be better if I had a separate cable for each 8pin socket?

I read something somewhere that this could somehow help with GPU temps a bit, and my 980Ti does indeed get a little warm sometimes.

So yeah, are two separate cables better than one?

Thanks

I have a Corsair 750W PSU with 1 power cable running from PSU to two 8 pin connecters with no issues. I'm using a R9 390

Hmm.
Elsewhere I read that using two cables might provide optimal performance.
Even in this forum someone called Ubersonic said this...

"If the card has:

1x 6pin: use either connector on the cable.
1x 8pin: use either connector on the cable.
2x 6pin: use both connectors on the cable.
1x 6pin + 1x 8pin: use both connectors on the cable, either one for the 8pin (you get two for convenience).
2x 8pin: use two cables.

You can connect a 2x 8pin card with just one cable but you shouldn't as it will sometimes be capable of drawing more through that cable than the connector on the PSU supports and can cause damage."

I'm not sure what to think now!
I might experiment and try 2 cables. With that in mind can you think of any reason why it would be a very BAD idea to use two cables? I don't want to damage anything!

2 separate cables, and that way you have removed all doubt. There will be those that Steam in stating that they've used a splitter cable for twenty years blah blah blah, but trust me... If you use two separate cables, there will be no issue.

With lower quality power supplies I try to use different cables to spread the load across different cables and often rails inside the PSU. With a top quality brand like Superflower, they wouldn't attach connectors to a cable that couldn't handle the connectors being used, so I'd trust the single cable with the two 8-pin ends without question. However, you have lots of options with your cable setup, so if it'll make you sleep better at night, use two different cables. :)

Agreed, go with the twocable setup. Better to be safe than sorry :)

I've got my 290 on one cable with two 8pin connectors.

When I had my hx750, I used two as each cable only had the one connector. The hx750i it was replaced with when I rma'd it, each cable has two connectors on. So figured they wouldn't put them there if you were not suppose to use them.
