So, I noticed that my PSU started whining the other night, more so when the CPU was under load processing some images. Then it let go with a bang and a column of smoke!

Ordered a replacement from here yesterday and it's just been delivered, so what are the chances that the HDD's and MB are OK?

Mental note: Backup, backup backup!!

What was the PSU you were using?

If its a good brand with all the relevant protection in place, you'll should technically be fine!

What PSU went bang and which did you replace it with?

9 times out of 10 I have found the rest of the system perfectly fine after a PSU goes bang

It was a Tagan unit I bought in 2011 when I built the machine. I've replaced it with an EVGA G2 750W. Massive overkill for the PC but the 10 year guarantee sold it to me!

I'll be installing it tonight when I get home and fingers crossed it'll boot first time!

hmm.....not sure with those units, IIRC they're pretty poor, but I could be mistaking them for another brand. Good choice with the EVGA, hope all is well!

as long as there wasnt a power surge i am pretty sure your other components are okay.
Unlike me when I had a surge and it melted my mobo power cable to its connector on the mobo. had to replace mobo too :(

It might have been the recent hot weather too, as my PSU just blew at the weekend, it was as Seasonic S12 and had been transplanted through many different configs and exceeded its warranty as it lasted exactly 12 years before going pop, and it did it all it relative silence :D

I guess that's why they call it the S12. ;)

Phew! Well I'm counting my lucky stars tonight! Everything is working absolutely fine!

The Tagan wasn't cheap if I recall, £80+ at least. I tend to only buy highly rated items for exactly this scenario.

A "disaster" like this certainly focuses your mind on the availability and vulnerability of your data!

Tagan started off well, then the US got a really bad rep for still high prices, but using cheap internals. EU versions of the same products used much better internals.

That being said, mine waited until 3 weeks out of warranty to just stop working one day.
Replaced that with XFX Black pro 1250w thingy, which I was happy with until the PSU switch has gone all dodgy.
