PSU Upgrade

Be gentle here, first post :P

I recently decided to "upgrade" my old system I built about 5 years ago and now have a ASUS P5QL-PRO mobo, core 2 extreme processor, 6gb ddr2 ram and literally just plugged a Geforce GTX 780 into there...

However that's where I have hit problems with essentially an old system with newer parts, everything went in fine with a little modding to my case but my PSU is of such an age now that it only has 1 x 6pin pcie connector, whereas the GTX 780 requires two of them to power it.

I have a budget of £60 for a new PSU and the current one is 750w so would rather not downgrade for the sake of an extra plug, yet on the other hand not "bodge" with adapter plugs.

Can anyone recommend a PSU around 750w and in the £60 budget? Preferably the modular kind, I have found various ones with mixed reviews so not really sure what I should be looking at.

The worlds most useless response here, im at work at the moment so can't get the model name... all I know is I bought it from maplins quite some time ago and has 750 in the name. Here's a picture off my phone from last night...

The GPU came with two adapter leads, one of which is shown in that picture plugged into the GPU and connected up to the only 6pin pcie connector on my PSU.

Would that work? I already have one of those black connectors... would that be fine using the one I already have and that adapter off something else that's spare?

You need to find out the make/model of your psu before going any further. I am 99.9% certain that your current 750W unit is not capable of powering a GTX 780.
A good quality unit of that size would have at least 4 x 6+2 pin pci-e connectors. If you have something like a CIT then it needs to go straight in the bin.

Sure will, as long as your PSU can handle it.

If it can't it should just trip out with most likely no damage done.

It's upto you to decide, take a photo of the infomation plate on the psu, it should give some clues as to make, model and manufacturer... along with it's specifications.

Haha, was expecting that :P

So with a £60 budget and looking between 650 - 750w and preferably modular, what would you recommend?

Way back when I got that PSU im pretty sure modular ones didn't even exist...

Before you go any further order a decent psu and throw that in the bin. When I read where you bought it the alarm bells started ringing as they only sell rubbish. That so called 750w psu of yours only has a pathetic 480w on the 12v rail and I expect even that is a optimistic target. Any modern psu should be able to deliver all or near enough all of it's stated power on the 12v rail where it's needed.

Either of these will see you good and all are a massive upgrade over the rubbish you have now.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £264.44
(includes shipping: £12.60)

If you want modular you need to increase the budget and buy this:-

Total: £88.49
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Yeah, it's not really enough/too close for comfort, esp with it being a crappy CIT.

780 draws up to 19A at stock, so yar... go ahead and replace, I would go for this:

Total: £70.49
(includes shipping: £10.50)

It's gold rated and has a single 12v rail of 44A.

(yours has x2 20A rails, and might just cut it, but blerge)

Yep, CIT junk. Great for office PCs i.e. (word processing), not so good if you want to do anything else.

I've got a 550W Golden Greeen running my Pentium G3258 w/R9 280X and my dad's now got a G2 650W running an FX6300 w/7950. Both are very good units. The only criticism I have about the Superflower 550W is that some of the leads are a little short if you have a big case.

Still feeling the best option is to just upgrade the PSU despite the extra cost...

Here's what I have got in there currently...

Model name is simply 750UB.

Just as I suspected :) That unit might make a good door stop if it is heavy enough.

If you want something modular then the Super Flower Leadex Gold 550W is currently £59.99.

The unit is 165mm long so make sure your case has enough room before you order anything.

Bugger it, I ordered the Supernova G2 ;)

Well above the budget but at least I know its future proof to an extent, it just means less presents for people this year haha! :p

You won't be disappointed with the Supernova G2. Rock solid unit, with a 7 year warranty, as long as you register within 30 days (AFAIK).

Going by the reviews I am sure I wont be disappointed ;)

Delivery on Thursday, I do hope that there's no issues connecting to my p5ql-pro mobo actually...

Rather looking forward to getting this machine back up and running haha, this laptop is crumby...

The EVGA G2 is essentially the same thing. It is built by SuperFlower and is based on the same platform. I was just trying to keep you close to your £60 budget.
