My PSU says it is a 550 Watt 'affair'. I've just bought an XFX 7900GTX 512Mb and i'm wonderin' whether i need to 'do' the PSU as it were.

Any words of wisdom? Whats this about 'Amps on a rail'?????

Also, what's this extra power connector i'll need for the new card, that i didn't need on the x800XL?

Ta

what are the rails on it then? (it's written on the side of the psu)

and you'll need a 6pin pci-e connector

EDIT: and what make it is?

Righto. Here we go:

HEC-550TD-PTE
AC INPUT 230Vac 50Hz 7A
DC OUTPUT +3.3V 30A; +5V 38A; +12V1 18A; +12V2 17A; -12V 0.3A; +5Vsb 2A

+5V & +3.3V Combined 185W
TOTAL OUTPUT 550W

Thats 'Watt' it says on the label....! LOL! (just a little joke for the un-initiated).

Please limit replies to fact, as i dont particularly want to buy a new PSU unless i really have to!

Cheers.

Not all that helpful TBH!
Do i add them together?

Cheeky git :p. Not at all hard to work out TBH! as fornowagain has easily described it.

You have about 30Amp on the 12volt rail and yes it should run that no problem at all.

+5V & +3.3V Combined 185W
TOTAL OUTPUT 550W

So take away the 185watt from the 550watt and you end up with 365Watt. 12 times 30 = 360 so you have just a little over 30amps on the 12volt rail (Or the lowest it could drop to).

Thanks a lot, buddy- forra' straight ansa to a contrived question!
As you can no doubt tell, i am in no way a PC-tech-type-eleccy!!

Once again, 'scuse my ignorance and no offence intended.

lol no problem m8. It was just a bit of a laugh :). Sorry if I was a little offensive too.

I only learned after the lesson from fornowagain as I don't know much about PSU's. Also my PSU shouldn't be running my system but I must just have an old and efficient PSU (luckily). I'm meant to have 26amps on the 12volt rail (at least) and I have only 22Amps on the 1 12v rail so it throws it up in the air for requirements but at least I'm safe.
