right i might risk sounding like a total window licker here. butare there different forms of pin conectors for psu`s i know you get 20 and 24 my mobo has a 20 pin slot and beside the cpu fan another 4, the original psu i boutght wouldnt fit the pin placement was the oposite of what i had. i want to buy something around 650 watts as only using a rubish little 400 just now but its like a jet taking off. any ideas on this. the mobo im using is a asrock dual sata 2 the one on here for intel. and my psu is some cheap thing i got from a local guy

The normal standard now is to have a 24pin connection for the motherboard as given by the ATX 2.X specification so any PSU you buy new should be like this, you can either leave 4pins overhanging or some allow you to 'snap' off 4pins (be aware that only certain PSUs do this and it will be obvious, if you do it to other PSUs then you are just breaking them).

What sort of budget do you have for a new PSU?

up to about 80 quid i apprechiate with out a decent psu your going no where but im upgrading my system and still need to buy new ram and a decent gfx
i was thinking about crucial ram and maby an 8800 gts gfx what you recon to that, im runing stock speed on my 2.4ghs Q6600 quad core 95w edition a dvd rw and 2 hdd one ide and one sata. what you recomend

Magic will have a look over those over the week end hows the weather up in dundee?

its hammering down here in glenrothes ahh.

im considering getting a new mobo but not sure just now. my curent one seams to have a lot of limitations only has 2 sata ports and 2 ide maby get the new mobo firt so it opens bigger better windows

It's chucking it down and a bit misty, hoping it cheers up for the weekend though. Have a good one yourself.

If you are looking for a new motherboard then something P45 or even P35 based would be worth looking at, it depends on your budget what to go for but good options are available below £80 anyway.

I was looking at the new Asus P5N32-E PLUS SLi nForce (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-222-AS&tool=3 looks ok well from my knowlege but will have to sit and have alook at a few more,

i hope it clears up to ment to be going on a big walk up Elie tomorow with the camera but if its like this the furthest i will walk will be to the tv or pc.

have a good one yourself.

I probably wouldn't go for that motherboard myself, it is based on the Nforce 6X0i chipset which has been replaced by the Nforce 7X0i chipset. They are good motherboards if you get one that works but they seem to be a little bit more flakey than the Intel options (P35/45, X38/48) so unless you are definitely thinking about SLi in the future they don't quite seem worthwhile to me.

Yeah was just reading about them. wasnt there a load of new asus mobos just released? i couldnt see anything in the spec about sata conections or anything i might look for the latest edition mobos arount 100 quid shouldnt go wrong with that price area

It's probably safe to assume that most motherboards you'll get today will have 4-8 SATA ports on them at least. Semi-pro knows his cookies. He'll guide you well.
