PSU with fan on bottom?

With cases now having the PSU compartment in the bottom, how do I go about putting in my Hiper Type R 580W PSU as the intake fan is on the bottom.

Do I just put it in as normal with the fan on the bottom or turn it upside down, is it ok to run them upside down?

I know its regarded as a poor PSU but it has worked perfectly for me over the past 4 years and will hopefully continue to do so

It's fine to mount it with the fan facing up. I have my Corsair PSU mounted this way in the Antec 300. Regarding fitting it with the fan facing down... check if the PSU compartment has rails on the side to allow for the PSU to sit up slightly so the fan can still operate.

if there is a grill/mesh on the base of the case where the psu will go and there is decent clearance beneath the pc to allow the fan to draw in air then mount it with the fan pointing down, tho this is just my own preference. as phil has already stated its fine to mount with the fan facing up, tho then there is the risk of unwanted nasties etc falling into the fan and potentially damaging the psu

Been running my psu with the fan down for ages now, never had any problems(there is a grill and mesh on the bottom of the case, and large case feet for pleny of clearance).

Iirc that's the power supply famous for blowing up without warning. Nonetheless, even that one will run upside down with no problems whatsoever.

If you turned the entire computer upside down the only parts which might have issues are the optical drive and centrifugal pump.

Edit: power supplies wont like it if you block off their intake completely then run them for any length of time though

As in the normal way, ie the fan intake on the bottom of the case?

The Hyper Type R has a metal grill over the intake fan, I might just take a dust filter off the front of the case intake and put it over the intake that will be facing upwards.

Case I just bought is the Fractal R2...

Yes,fan intake at the bottom.Pc sits on top of another pc,so there is loads of clearance under the case(wouldnt work very well sat on a carpet lol).

Dust filters on my case(cm690-II)and on the Fractal r2,so shouldnt be an issue..as long as the case is stood on a hard surface(ie laminate etc,as oppose to carpet).

Running my corsair HX850 with the fan downwards, case is a Lian Li A70F, vents in the bottom of the case and rails that raise the psu up by an inch or so.

Also, with the psu mounted like this, it keeps the main power cable out of the way, since that pic was taken ive changed to sli gtx 275 gpu's, if the psu was mounted fan upwards, it would be extracting hot air from the bottom gpu.

is that fan not actually drawing air in? i thought the fan at the back beside where the lead plugs in was the exhaust fan and the other one was an intake fan? i'm probably completely wrong tho!

p.s. sweet looking build setter

Cheers mate, will have to get a few more recent pics uploaded here, got 2 gpu's now and a new soundcard, your right about the fan too, the one on the bottom is the intake.:)

Sorry for the poor quality, only had my phone cam available.

Both cards are 640mhz xfx gtx 275's, top one is my first card, bottom one was bought on members market last week, slightly different design but clocks are identical on both cards. Asus xonar dx pcie souncard is sitting above the first vid card, just make it out in the pics

looking good fella, thats a sweet looking case, looks like there's a ball of room, christ a family of small folk could live in there!! must be a dream to build in.

quick question, did the push/pull set up on the cooler make much of a difference to your temps? only asking cause i'm looking at a cheap way to prepare for this Mediterranean summer its looking like we're gonna have:cool::cool:, can't really be bothered fitting a better cooler to mine atm!! (cm hyper 212 plus)

and apologies to the op for stomping on their thread.

Yep, it is a nice case to work in, way more room than ill probably ever need. Regarding the push/pull setup, ive never actually ran a single fan on the cooler on this i7 rig. But on my previous 3.8ghz q6600, a second fan shaved 3-4c off temps compared to a single fan.
