What woud keep burning PSU's out on my PC that last, First one lasted 3 years and took out the CPU, a q9450, next 6 months and took out one of the GFX cards, next 6 hours didn't take any hardware this time.

PC Spec: MB Asus Striker 2 Formula, CPU E8600, RAM 8GB Crucial Ballistix, GFX Zotac 8800GT 512MB Amp Edition x 2 in SLi, 2TB in RAID 0+1, WinTV HVR1300.

I've built 23 PC's to date and this one has gotten me stumped.

Some suggestions would be great.

Thanks in Advance

First PSU = Antec Phantom 500W

Second PSU = OCZ900MXS 900W

Third PSU Corsair HX850 PSU

None of these are cheap at over a £100+ Im quiet aware of the problems cheap PSU's cause.

However I am going to use a cheap PSU to trouble shoot this one rather than blow the new one again.

All Protected via surge protector

The other 3 PC's in the house are all running fine. One other off the same wall socket as the PC which keeps frying PSU's

With the exception of the CPU and GFX card that were taken out the only other common demoinators are the motherboard, RAM, Second GFX card, DVD RW, Case oh and ME.

EDIT: I just found out the last PSU fried my PSU tester!!!

I used a new lead each time I replaced the PSU as a matter of course.

Ive taken the surge protector out of the equation for now.

Dam well missed the courier bringing the replacement, I was only next door too. PITA.

Dodgy House electrics - My thoughts exactly so I did call in a Sparky - One bedroom socket was dodgy but none down stairs where teh PC is and of course its on another circuit. (Another £150)

Must be Gremlins!!

doh!

is that surge protector the same one that all the blown PSUs have been plugged into? I'd be getting shot of it if it was.

Yes it was the same one. IT also turns off all teh other peripherals and just leaves the PC's 5v rail working. (or3v can't remember)

Hello Summermoon,

Which case do you use? . . . is the case interior hot? . . . does the PSU sit at the top or bottom?

The Case is an Xblade with the PSU at top.

There are 3 120mm fans(Rear Side and front) NB and SB 50mm fans, a Zalman CNPS 9900 LED PWM for the CPU. Two Antec 70mm directional fans.

The case never seemed to get hot CPU ran at 29.c-33.c when OC'd to 3.82Ghz.

There was a hefty build up of dust at the front before the filters and the case switch was shall we say a fluff ball of dust.

The Surge protector is a Oneclick Intellipanel.

Well Got my new PSU HX-850 and fitted it this morning, PC's still running fine. 9 Hours and counting running 3d Mark Vantage on continuous loop. Should bed it in nice.

Electrical smell has gone too now

Not using the surge protector. Too scared to now lol.

Checking the Corsair Forums it seem a number of peeps have been having the same problems even with the PCi-e cable!

Someone asked for numbers - which numbers ? volts, amps drawn etc., not sure what your after.

New MB - RMA Asus - OMFG the last RMA I did with them took 18 months!! and 123 emails only to be sent a replacement with a warped board!! The next one arrived a month later and work TG!

Well its still going strong even restarted it a few time and seem ok.

Corsair say that the adhesive used with the Capacitors is the cause of the smell!! New one on me but hey.

IVe started an Overclock and its up to 4Ghz and running it full power. PSU drawing 655 - 703watts at present (3 GFX in SLi too) just to see if it will break something or flush this mother board out

Im so FO with it.

Won't be taking the wife out for dinner for a few months if it goes and I NEED an new I7 980x!! (Dreamer)

Well I guess alls ok now. Backed the OC down to 3.8Ghz as out side temps are getting hotter here (75.C)

The surge protector is the culprit - Pluged my printer in and started printing POOF! Printers dead! Though only a dead fuse. REplaced and it went again. So much for the protection when it alone destroys stuff!!

Intelli Panel from ONe click - you'll be hearing from me soon.

Thanks for all your help guys and some good learning material on UPS's :)
