Taking a trip to Cologne next week and been trying to figure out the best/cheapest way to get from the Airport to the City and around the city whilst I'm there.

Had a 3 day pass when visiting Dusseldorf (and Barca) however having trouble working out the cheapest way to do it for Cologne.

Can anyone who's been or going help please?

I've looked at the map on the http://www.kvb-koeln.de/german/tarif/eng.html but can't figure out the tariff's or what kind of pass I need.
I'm going Sunday to Wednesday..

Thanks

Just a plain 1B Tagesticket will get you round Cologne for a day, it's 8.60 EUR.

If you are more than one person, then you can a Tagestticket for 5 people, which is 13.10 EUR total.

If you want to go further afield around you can look at the Shoenestagesticket NRW

Coincidentally I'm also in Cologne next week so I'm watching this thread with interest. Great info on the day tickets. Thanks

Service is frequent, comfortable, and cheap for sure (reliable....not so much if you commute ;))...but man the ticketing is pain in the butt. I am tech-savvy and understand the German and I still get confused by the machines and the pricing.

There are rumours that Düsseldorf will enter the 21st century in the coming years and implement a contactless ticket system! The future, imagine!

Thanks guys, will download CityMapper and have a play and thanks for the link.

@mid_gen thanks for the ticket info! How do I work out if I need a 1a or 1b? Basically I need to get from the Airport to Cologne center, around cologne (can't imagine we'll be going far, but would be nice to jump on the train/tram etc to go a little exploring around the city) and then back to the airport...
Sorry, maybe I'm being dull but I don't see how I work out what price level / ticket type I need to purchase.

Yep, trains. Cheap, frequent, on time and reliable. We used them for much of our trip.

^ this guy gets it, and this will apply to almost any major city. They will all have some form of travel card which allows you to access the public transport network for x period for y money, which gives unlimited use. The detail is in finding what the cheapest way to get one is.

Been and come back.
Got the train from the airport to the city. £5 for both of us one way.
Didn't bother with any other trams or trains whilst we were there.
Thanks all.

Lovely city, it's been 10 years since I was there but never used any public transport either. Just walked and took a boat down the Rhine, one of those ones where you get lunch and a stop off.

What did you think?

Lovely city. Will be going back definitely! Weather was dry but cloudy, seems to be a beautiful place if the sun was to come out.

Christmas markets were great, transport links were faultless as was getting out of the airport to the station.
