Given the annual rainfall in the North Pole, I guess it can be classed as a desert.

Indeed, you can have a desert of ice, in fact, the polar deserts are the largest deserts on the planet in terms of surface area, each over 50% larger than the Sahara, which is the largest hot desert.

So OP, do you prefer hot deserts or cold deserts?

If I was having a Sunday lunch/Christmas dinner with my family I would refer to it as pudding as typically it would be a pudding being served. "Mother, what is the pudding?"

If I was out dining or it was any other occasion I would ask what was for dessert.

If you happen to find a copy of Debrett's you may be surprised to find middle/upper class use pudding to mean the general sweet course. Dessert is a separate course altogether eaten after pudding, usually consisting of fruit.
