What are these like? They quick? Been looking at a few, what would expected power output be if i was to put a set of Twin 40's, wild cam and straight thru exhaust on it? Do the 1.9s handle? Any problems? Cheers

best handling hot-hatch EVER (although i've got one so biased)

dont waste your time with the 40's on a gti just spend the cash on a mi16 lump :) :) and then you can add carbs.

great handling although electrics are rank rotten (hence why mine is off the road AGAIN

check out the 205gti drivers forum

pretty good font of knowledfe for all things pug related

oh and dont discount the 205's big sister the 309 gti :) just as good and less twitchy on the limit

The 8v engine is already in a fairly high state of tune, so extracting significantly more power is not cheap. The Mi16 engine swap is popular and quite straightforward, though the injection system and exhaust need a bit of modding to fit the 205.

Good handling, though these cars pretty much defined the term "lift off oversteer"!

Shells are surprisingly rot free, though a few more rusty examples around these days. Check for cracking at the top of the door pillars!

No no, not sideways! A few chaps used them in our rally group and my they are nippy. As echoed above, you wont really get any extra horeses out of the engine without serious money, and for that you might as well stick a 16V lump in it.

Have a peer at some 309GTis.. slightly slower to 60 (as they are marginally heavier) but o so more stable in the twistys.

When you're going to look at one, be sure to check the rear suspension. It has a tendancy to sag and is very costly to fix. The early models weren't galvanised either, so are prone to rot!

Hmm... I'm not too sure on the change over dates. By all means the 309GTi was released in two versions (one being a facelift) and thats where I'd stick my money. I think they were around 'H' reg and after.

Not so sure on the 205s. 205Drivers would be able to tell you though..

I can echo the comments above, 205's can be very nasty if you get a corner wrong. Mine's all over the place.

The Mi16 conversion is very popular, a healthy 16v engine puts out around 160bhp stock, throttle bodies or bike carbs are popular mods.

I really want one, as i have a normal 205 at the moment, but i am only 18 so doubt i could even get reasonable insurance on the 1.6

I own a nice white 1.9. I've owned it 9 months and it has been flawless. I've put on 14,000 miles.

The car is great fun, and with good tyres the handling is nowhere near as dangerous as people make out.

Its a good car, but get a good one!

Had three so far (2x1.6 and a 1.9) and wouldn't say no to a mint Sorrento Green 1.9 :)

The 1.9 was due for the MI treatment but bought my scoob instead.

Cracking cars!
