Having some issues with my Pug 306 DTurbo (1999), and would like some advice on what people think is wrong with it.
Bit of history first, last summer, the car started to have issues with cooling, and would often creep towards the overheating mark when stuck in traffic. I never let the car reach the red mark on the gauge and always pulled over and let the car cool. We later found out that this was a problem with the fan controller, and this would need to be replaced. The problem was that the fans were not cutting in, and therefore the engine not being cooled. I did not get round to getting this part replaced, and the car worked fine and never overheated.
Recently I have been having to top up the coolant quite frequently, however the car’s temperature has stayed at around 85 on the gauge, which is normal, even if the warning light for coolant comes on. Recently though, one of the cooling fans has started to work again, and seems constantly on.
Today, I have had to top the water up twice, this is travelling over a distance of around 50 miles, so I think there is a issue with the cooling system. Also recently the car has been idling at around 900rpm, and blue/grey smoke will come out when first started, and will continue until the engine has warmed up. When sitting in traffic, or idling however, the car seems to be pulsating, is the best word to describe it, and the rev counter fluctuates between 900 and 1000rpm. I have also started to notice that the gears can take a bit of force to engage.
I can tell the car is running differently, its just the way I know it drives, sorry about the long post. I had a punto that started to drink coolant, however the heaters stopped working, this turned out to be a gasket, the heaters work on this Pug, but don’t want the gasket to go on this as well!

It sounds as though it may be head gasket failure unfortunately. Is the oil emulsifying at all? how much water are you having to top up at a time?

Having a compression test would be the best way of identifying HGF I would imagine.

Forgot to mention, before when went to start it, it wouldnt turn over, turned the key, tried to start, seemed like the battery was flat, moved the ignition key back, and the electrics came back, but all the guages were at the full position, then they went back to normal.

The glow plug light went off before i tried to turn it over, however it just seemed dead! After leaving it a while, it was fine again!

How can i tell if the oil is emulsyfying? Also would it be ok to run until friday, as long as the coolant is kept topped up. How much for a replacement gasket, cause the head shouldnt be warpped if it is still running?

Unless this is a typo...

How about it's not being looked after by its owner? The cooling fans are not an opptional extra. The 306DT is notorious for overheating if not quickly cooled by the fans. There is a good reason they have 2 large cooling fans

Chances are by not replacing this part which costs less than £10!! you have cooked the head gasket.

Two questions, how many miles and when was the water pump last changed?

Pull the oil filler cap off. If there's a manky white mayonnaise like substance in there then there's coolant in the engine oil. This is a bad thing.

The gasket isn't much - around £20. The killer is the labour as you've got to pull the head off. As a ballpark figure a bloke at work paid around £270 including a skim on his Punto last week.

Earlier 306DTs (mainly 95/96) were prone to leaking radiators. Mine went through two in as many years as the bottom of the rad just rots away and the water starts leaking out.

You should really have got the cooling system fixed.

Is it an HDi or an XUD engine?

Sounds like you've warped the head to be honest. I did this in my non turbo 306 when I had it.
Mine went all in one go though, fine on temp, then when I pulled in at work it forced loads of coolant out which was rather warm.
Called the RAC out to looked at it and figured it was HGF, when I started it when it was cold it made some dodgey running noises, similar to what you are explaining I think.

Think its a XUD Engine. The reason the part was not replaced, is because the car was not overheating, and the garage advised that it should be fine due to it not overheating. With regards to the water pump, i am not sure. If the oil is emusufying, then is it looking at a new gasket plus work?

Like i said, my punto had a HGF all at once, and the head was warpped because the car would not start. I know should have got the fan sorted, but since i was advised by the garage, i had left this.
