Just been to clean the garden up of poop after jess, i spotted a few small white worms in her poo. she is coming upto 6 months old and has been spot and worm tablet treated every month at the vets and she has just been this morning for both treatments, should she be still having worms in her after she has been treated?

drontal puppy wormer is like a pink liquid you put on their food, you should use it every so often with a new puppy think its 8,12 and 20 wks then every 2 months but check with vet

First off, puppies shouldn't be wormed every month, its every 3. And if by spot you mean flee treatment, don't bother until they actually get it, the only time dogs get flees are if they get prolonged exposure to dirty and unclean environments.

Second off, any worming or flee treatment from pets at home will not work, there crap.

Thirdly, 80% of all worming tables dissolve the worms, so they shouldn't be coming out in there poo.

Milbamax (SP?) is the best worming tablet you can get, you get it from vets and it doesn't cost more then any others.

The problem with dog worms is when they sniff other dogs poo's and if they haven't been wormed, they catch worms. So if you live in a poorer area, your dog is more likely to get worms more often then a better off area.

Teki has it mostly right. Definitely switch wormer, as worms can and do become highly immune to various products, and it varies by area. Panacur is all but useless in these parts, Drontal+ isn't bad, but Milbemax kills them dead. Whatever you're using, switch to something else (preferably Milbemax) and do it every three months from here-on-in. The pup's old enough to go to 3 monthly worming now.

I don't agree with the flea comment though. My dogs have had fleas once in about 10 years, but it's not from prolonged contact with dirty places lol Though true, dirty places likely haven't been cleaned of fleas amongst other things. :p Fleas are fleas, just like worms, and are spread on contact with other infested animals (cats are swines for this) and by picking up shed eggs and stray adults.

Don't treat unless you see some (or symptoms thereof), as they're pretty rare really.

Yeh jess has only had a tablet every 3 months but she had the spot on treatment every month. im only going by what the vet has done so i would think they no what there talking about. Now that she is pooing the worms out do i need to redose her or is that it and the treatment has worked. For a couple of quid for a spot on treatment i think id rather just pay it and be sure its done

What i did was raise my puppy to my mouth, rear first. Purse my lips whilst lifting her tail and then suck really, really hard on her little doggy starfish.

Rinse and repeat until worm free. I used a comedy 19th cent. Cowboy spittoon as well for the extra "Pa-ding" noise between sessions.

As a brother of 2 vets who have had a pack of dogs ranging form 2 to 5 throughout my life, I agree with Teki and Rainmaker.

Get a decent wormer form th Vets every 3 months.
Don't bother with fleas until you see them, which should be rarely. You also find many specieis of flea will only be on the dog for a day or so before jumping off. My digs get hedgehog fleas but these types fo fleas don't like ogs so dont stay more than a day.

Not all vets are created equal. If that was the case I'd be saying go back and ask them instead of making a thread in GD. :p As Teki said, most if not all modern wormers dissolve the worms inside the intestines, except in extreme burden the dog won't be excreting them whole.

As for re-dosing now she's pooing them out, again your vet should have covered this? ;) Flea treatments aren't something you should ideally be exposing a dog to all the time; repeated exposure to any drug/chemical 'just in case' isn't a great idea. There are plenty of vets who agree.

I suggest you go back to your vet and ask them for a full explanation of the worming, and ask about a different product. Which one were you using? I can't remember you saying so in the thread.

I once gave our dog too many worming tablets by mistake - he was running round in circles look all wild-eyed for several hours like he was wasted on speed.

i rang first thing this morning as they werent open when i asked in here lastnight, anyway she said the worm tablet is doing what its ment to do as there been passed in her poops she then said continue to spot treat her which i bought some yesterday and that she doesnt need a worming tablet for another 6 months now
