having a mare here... want to insure my pushbike for when i go to work as its nearly a £1000 worth and it comes out of my wages on a cycle to work scheme.

who do insure it with?

cycleguard won't insure it at my workplace
endsleigh won't insure it if it's not got a sold secure lock
eandl won't insure me to go work and back - only comepetitions and stuff.

i only want to insure it for theft at my workplace... house insurance will cover it a home!!!

get a sold secure lock then.

but sold secure stuff includes ground anchors. by the sound of it, if it's not in the ground anchor it's not insured which would completely defeat the object of theft insurance.

Not sure what the premium would be, but could you add it to your home insurance as a 'travel item' or something?

kd

i'll look into this as it could be worth an ask, cheers.

all i want is 'normal' theft insurance lol....

The policy document for my ETA insurance states;

This insurance covers your pedal cycle for theft, accidental loss or accidental damage occurring within Britain and for up to ninety days in Europe and up to sixty days worldwide whilst left unattended in a public place at any time provided you have complied with the following:

  • The pedal cycle is secured by an approved lock to an immovable object, or;
  • It is locked in a building where theft occurs because of forcible or violent entry.
I'm not sure where you got the idea that a Sold Secure approved ground anchor must be used, but it's certainly not the case. The insurer only requires that you use the relevant level of Sold Secure approved lock for the value of your bicycle. For example, my bike is valued at £1k, and so I have to use a Silver level Sold Secure approved lock. My annual premium is £108 but that includes 3rd party liability insurance, accidental damage insurance and breakdown recovery.

You should be able to put a bike of that value on any descent home insurance policy with out additional charges it is generally above the value of £1500 that they start to add additional costs, you will have to ask for cover away from home though.

As above really for the lock though - sold secure to the value of the bike and has to be locked to an immovable object.

Or you could do what I do and bring your bike into the office and keep it at your desk :D

all sorted through home contents so cheers for heads up. added about a fiver to each month and i don't need a special lock (they said common sense applied and it had to be locked if left anywhere) and i got a loadof other stuff like £1500 minimum cover and legal insurance too.

so i celebrated by going aldi/halfords and buying reflective strips, lights, mudguards, a water bottle and a tyre repairkit..... gutted aldi didn't have any bike lights left so cost me £36 in halfords but i wanted the biggest rear light going - and it has a cool knightrider setting! :D

did a search for sold secure and it brought up some ground anchors which left me a bit puzzled as i thought i must be reading the wording wrong that's all.
