I had the Z3 booked in to get what I thought was the right part replaced, so I just doubled checked what the problem was.
Thank goodness I did as I had ordered an engine fan, and not the pusher fan.

This would also explain why I couldn't see any damage on the engine fan, even though they said one of the fan blades was damaged :o

Anyway, here's the deal. When I turn on the AC, it activates the pusher fan. One of the blades appears to be missing, thereby being out of balance and vibrating whilst operating. I somehow missed this fault when I bought it (even the protection grid has a hole in it), and the dealer isn't prepared to put anything towards it due to the 'excellent deal' I got.

So yeah, the pusher fan is the wrong side of €200 plus fitting plus VAT etc.
Now, is it worth replacing? I'll have to do it eventually as the vibrations and noise to get annoying with the AC on at low speeds/idle but I don't use it now in the winter months.

However, this is going to cost a helluva lot. (Who'd have thought a 9 year old BMW is expensive to fix? ;))

I don't really have any other options do I? :(

A secondhand fan would appear to be the sensible and obvious option. If you are really keen take the fan off and statically balance it by trimming the blade opposite the damaged one.

Why would you want to drive around with it broken

Because there are varying degrees of "broken". Considering that he has had the car for months and only just realized the fault It'd say it was on the lesser end of the scale :D.

Because I don't really feel like dropping another €500 right now :p
My annual mileage is well below 10,000 miles and this is now split between two cars. (Or even more, as I'm still currently at home)
Unless I use the AC (rare), you wouldn't know it's there anyway

I actually noticed the noice as soon as I sat in it in the warehouse.
However, I forgot about it when it came to haggling as I had a list of other stuff
I asked them for a price and after a quote of nearly €500 from the dealer and them not wanting to contribute I put it on the back burner.

I dont get the idea of buying a 10k car and then not fixing it
It's a lot more than £10k once you add everything up.
Insurance is the best part of a grand, tax was €2500. Add the Eisenmann and it gets nice and expensive.

FWIW, total spend has been just over £13k excluding fuel.

I'll get it sorted, just curious as to whether others would in my position.
I feel pressured into getting it done sooner rather than later now :p

Because some people can live with certain 'niggles' on their car, sometimes regardless of cost.

Just dont see the point in living with niggles like a defective pusher fan if you are clearly not skint, hence the £13k+ car. The question is 'Where should I get it done' not 'should I get it done' :p

I really don't think it is a matter of being skint or the value of the car to be honest. Day in, day out I see customers noting down no action on some pretty annoying niggles/faults that we pick up on services. I guess some people's priorities are different. That, or they just don't care.

I do have to admit that I'm extremely lazy when it comes to repairing things that don't need immediate attention. Granted my car didn't cost £13k+ but still :).

If it's similar to the E39 it's not a particularly difficult job. Do it yourself and save on the labour.

Couple of bolts for the bumper and a few screws for the wheel arch liners and undertray, and then the fan assembly itself it rather straightforward.

Hm. Whilst that looks strangely tempting, I'm pretty sure I don't have the tools, skills or patience :p

I shuddered when I saw that pic.

I would have sorted the fan as soon as I noticed it was making a noise. On the otherhand, if I'd managed to ignore it this long, I'd just keep ignoring it until it either stopped working or something else needed attention.

You've got a price for sorting it, shop around and see if you can get a better one. Failing that, suck it up.
