Putting a Case on wall mounted shelf

hmm, I have a case on a wall mounted shelf and a wall mounted HTPC, but brick walls :( I don't think I would trust plasterboard walls to hold the weigh unless you can mount it to the joists.

I had mine on the wall for ages. Worked really well with no issues until I had a change around. It was a fully loaded Phanteks Evolv X. This was stone though and not plasterboard.

What brackets are you referring to when you say "standard shelf brackets" ?

I'm assuming less than 10kg for the case when fitted with components?

You can actually get some high load fastenings for plasterboard, and is it timber frame or dot and dab?
I've installed some heavyweight TVs on dot and dab with special fixings. If you have the PC side on, then your shelf will likely span a joist (or two if you are lucky) so with some care you should be able to get some decent fixings. However - if you are not a confident DIYer I would consult a handyman before you put too much weight on anything.

Studs* - joists are the horizontal load bearing members.

But there are some very high load fastenings for plasterboard (both 2-by timber frame and dot&dab constructions)... as long as the shelf is put up with the load in mind, it's absolutely possible. It's all about the fixings

There isnt a desk., i will check wall 99% sure its a stud partition, pc would be side on.

Can you y recommend any from screwfix.. I imagine 3 brackets with 3 to 4 screws in each bracket case is at top of post

What anout these

This can definitely be done, don't worry.

Best trick is to line up at least one or two fixtures with a stud and screw into them - assuming you don't have stud detector, just knock with your hand and you'll be able to hear where there's a dull thud (ie the stud).

Then for any plasterboard parts these are the strongest by far in weight tests:

These are used to support boilers etc so very very strong.

I've got a 3d printer reel shelf holding 40kg+ of reels without budging (I did pull ups on it to test when I made it.... ;) )

Sorry kurgen posts passing in the ether! Those are fine for light use, I'd go belt and braces myself for this sort of thing...! The ones you suggested are ok shear strength (ie weight on it), but pretty poor tensile strength (ie pulling out the wall)

For what you're describing, I'd say just go with spring toggle and know it's super strong. Can share some load test videos or you can just trust me!

Can anyone detect a recovering engineer.... ;)

I might be able to borrow a stud detector, but thanks I will look into the spring toggles. there will be a TV to hang to so I will need some anyway. Review on screwfix suggests to use some washers too

Stud detector? Use your hand, knock on the wall, listen for the change in sound where it’s mounted to a stud, it’s usually very obvious.

Also as it doesn’t seem to have been mentioned, consider attaching the PC to the wall or the shelf - it wouldn’t take much force on a cable to topple a midi tower size case over and that could be expensive and painful.

I was thinking of putting the cables in self adhesive trunking for the usb / power / display cables to keep that away from snagging. This might not happen I just wanted some options. on the floor tis got more chance of a boot going through it or coke through the top fan grill

Buy some gripit fixings. The blue ones are rated for over 100kgs off plasterboard.

I've got TV's, bookshelves, wardrobes and even my server rack all hung up with them.

Gripit are decent enough (although the company is in dire straits), but still not as strong as spring toggles.

For both reassurance that most options are more than strong enough and to see why spring toggles are worth it, just Google some tests, eg:

Good point re toppling though - no harm in fixing it to the shelf perhaps? Eg metal strap etc, just depends on the case design etc

You'll see a server, PC etc suddenly really isn't a problem... ;)

And obviously remember you're aiming to screw at least on bracket into a stud which takes it into extraordinarily strong scale
