i did these steps

1. Run REGEDIT.
2. Find NAMESPACE key in left pane (HKEY_Local_Macine \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Current Version \ Explorer \ Desktop \ Namespace)
3. Expand NAMESPACE (click '+' box)
4. Delete the value RECYCLE BIN in right pane

to remove the recycle bin from the desktop but now can't get into it. DOH!
Can someone tell me what i need to add to the registry to fix it. A screen shot of someone's who hasn't deleted there's would be useful.

Next time i'll try using a tool, any suggestions while i'm here

If it's any help :)

perfect, thanks a lot. plus i've got it removed from the desktop, but still everywhere else which is what i originally wanted.
However a clean desktop doesn't look great on my 17" LCD, but when the new Benq 24" is out should have a better effect.

If you wanted to remove the Recycle Bin from the desktop just use TweakUI from Microsoft's Power Toys. You can alter loads of Windows settings, and then if you ever want it back you just re-tick the box. ;)

Great little tool.
