Hey there, I got some Maxtor external drive, I never move it anywhere or anything it’s just holding my music collection and movies, and its allways being used, so not much for "backup" use

Is there any benefit to removing it from its caddy and putting it into my pc?

As far as I am aware it’s IDE, so will it be ok to set it as slave and plug it into the IDE cable that my CD rom drive is attached to?

thanks

Yes, should be fine.
I would think it would be faster than the USB connection, not not sure!
Personally i wouldnt bother if it means destroying the encosure as i know some dont come apart easily and cant put that back together.
In the end i wouldnt bother as it is more effort and the IDE cable is huge and ugly.

i pulled the caddy apart and managed to put it back to gether :P

as i allready have the IDE cable in i might as well try it...

thanks for that slash

You shouldn't see any speed difference from having it on USB afaik - the bandwidth of USB 2.0 is enough for any external hard drive. No major advantage either way apart from space saving really :)

I bet the moment you remove it from the caddy and install it, you will need to shift some files or something to a mates house :)

I'd keep it in the caddy myself.
