If you have a game, that you bought in a box, but which is also available from Steam, can you get Steam to list it as one of your games and update it accordingly etc?

You can add any program, even if it isn't a game to steam. So yes to that.

About the updating, I don't think it would work properly. However, if it is available on steam then maybe.

You can register some games with Steam (such as Half Life Generations, Prey, Speedball, etc.) but not all. If you click Activate A Game (from the Steam Games tab) then don't enter a key and click next there is a help for this which eventually brings up a games list with which keys you can add.

Alternatively you can add them as a shortcut once you have installed the game but this will not update it.

You can add shortcuts to anything into the list on steam, and you'll be able to use the in game steam community shizzle. You won't get updates, and you won't be able to install through steam.

You can only activate certain products on steam (even though you can buy them on steam separately).

Other than Valve games, Prey and Unreal III can be activated.

Don't know about any others.

Ahh OK... I was looking at ARMA2 which is 50% more expensive thru Steam. So I could add it to my Steam games list, but I won't get the benefit of Steam updates...

Still, I'm happy to download patches manually TBH to save £12!

Some games you can register the key and have full Steam privileges, for example UT3 or Prey. There's a list somewhere on the Steam site...
