Been thinking about replacing the old CPU (see sig) with a 2nd hand Amd Athlon 4200+ x2 dual core socket 939 2.2 GHz from the bay.

2 Questions:

1) Is this suitable (i.e. will it work on my mobo)?
2) will it make an appreciable difference?

I'm bumping up the RAM to 2 GB (dual channel kit) soon and would do the CPU upgrade at the same time.

and lastly - anyone got any they wanna sell me for the price of a pint and postage ;)

Seems the mobo is an OEM one produced for fujitsu siemens and has no support or updates from ASUS.

It may or may not work with a dual core X2 - looking on the web some users have duals installed and working while others have issues (i'd have a hunt round on the net before deciding).

That said - if it did work it would be a fairly significant upgrade. I noticed a real boost moving from a 3700 A64 to a 3800X2. Much snappier in windows and multitasked much better.

The additional ram would be a nice upgrade too. :)

The dual core socket 939 cpu's sell for silly money on there mate, so I wouldn't bother unless you can pick one up really cheap.

Great thanks for that - I've been looking around and seems it will work - even if it dontI'll just re- sell it and no big loss.

I know - there is just one I'm watching at the mo - finishes early next week - have an absolute limit in mind so unless I can get it cheaper than the new one I've seen somewhere I wont buy!!

From what I have seen, I would guess this is what they fetch on there...

X2 3800 ~£40+
X2 4200 ~£60+
X2 4400 ~£80+
X2 4600 ~£90+

If I was you mate, I would try save a bit and sell the mobo/cpu/ram and go for a new setup for as cheap as possible. Maybe a Core 2 duo with 4GB DDR2 ram, it goes for next to nothing these days.

Actually the one I'm watching is currently ~£30. I wont pay over ~£40 for it!!

Problem is the current set up aint worth a penny (well maybe a fiver on the bay) so I just gotta find all the cost for the new set up.

Was tempted to save up for a new set up but I've got two small kids who just take all my money so I just get tiny budgets to play with!! lol. I'd have to wait till May next year before I could afford the new mobo etc!!

But thanks for the feedback - decision not final yet - will wait to see what the weekend brings. :-)
