my 4 gig of ram 2x2gig sticks of g-skill only work together as a single stick one stick in the brown slot and the other in the yellow slot next to it,,for some reason they now wont work in dual channel, will this be ok using different slots.

IT's OK but it will only be running in single channel mode.

What is the memory and how have you set it it up in the BIOS?

Did you enable the XMP or inpur the values manually?

Ideally, you need to identify the problem - as it 'may' be a hardware fault and looking at your spec most of it may be under warranty still. But hopefully it's just an erroneous setting...

EDIT: Run CPUz and post up an image of the memory tab.

sorry its a different pc to my sig
its a asus p5k premium board q6600 with 2xsticks of gskill drr2 ram.i think the top a1 brown and yellow b2 slots are dead,
if i try one stick of ram in any of those slots the pc wont post.
but it works ok with both in the bottom two slots,

It sounds pretty condemning for the other two slots.

If you want to have a play – you could try upping the MCH a couple of increments and maxing out the memory’s recommended voltage. You could also try loosening the timings, even the frequency just to see if it’s possible to get life out of the other slots (and then work form there).

But I concede that it will probably for little or no reward…

But i would still test the memory with memtest - just in case you have two separate problems that have coincided with each other.

As for running the machine in single channel mode it’s not a problem – you just wont be accessing the full potential speed of the memory.

Additional: As the q6600 is still a very capable CPU have you considered buying a second hand P45 MB off the MM as the rig is definitely worth spending ~£40 to get it back to full spec?
