Hi, I've got a couple of Servers I would like to put in the loft. Has anyone any experience of this? Was it too hot in Summer? too damp?

Has anyone got any recommendations for an temp / humidity senor?

Thanks

Only you can really tell us about the conditions in your loft.

It's far from ideal to stick them up there though, not least because of potential temperature extremes, but lofts are typically dusty environments, which is unlikely to do the health/longevity of the servers any favours.

I have a rack in the loft with a few server. My loft is very dry and boarded. The temp extremes are "extreme" but dont take any hardware out of its Specification and some of the Drives in those racks are over 7 years old so its obviously not "that" bad for them (they are also spinning 24/7) i have in excess of 20 drives up there in the last 5 years i have had 1 failure and the drive was 5.5 years old so take from that data what you will. In terms of dust its MUCH better than the house mainly due to the fact you dont walk past them stirring the dust about. I clean the dust filter once a year and its hardly dirty with the inside being SPOTLESS especially compared to a PC in a house.

The downside was I had to put power up there, the lighting ring was not enough to tap off of so i installed a 32a supply into the loft but if you have no idea how to do that they obviously there will be cost unless you have power up there but for a single server you could tap off the ligting and use a 3a fused spur and meet regs.
Also going into the loft is a bit of a faf when things go T^ts up and of course running ethernet up there.

Overall i have had zero issues with the rack being in the loft however your millage may vary if you have a damp loft etc.
