putting weight on

a good diet yes! but reread his post... at his age he should eat 'normal' good food

You're right of course... But no-one has suggested anything different. Are you implying that we recommended he eat 'non-normal' bad food? :p

When we use the word "diet" we don't mean "try to lose weight". We are talking about him eating healthy foods. I pointed him in the direction of my bodybuilding guide which has a section on diets. In that guide are listed the following foods.

Beef
Pork
Chicken
Turkey
Tuna
Salmon
2% milk
Eggs
Cottage cheese 2%
Yogurt 2% plain
Whey protein powder (post workout drink)

Asparagus
Broccoli
Green beans
Cauliflower

Pasta
Potatoes
Rice (short & long grain)
Sweet potatoes
Egg noodles
Brown (& wild) rice
Oatmeal, rolled oats (slow cooked)
Multi grain bread

Olive oil (extra virgin)
Butter (unsalted)

Obviously there are plenty more healthy foods but that was just to give him a start. All the above are 'normal' good foods and if he was eating that kind of thing he would be doing far better than 99% of people his age. :)

i have your guide bookmarked, and i like it, i just feel IMO that a 15 year old boy should not be following any form of diet plan, or weight training program, yes eat well and exerise but let the body finish growing first

thats what I was eating wait until your 17/18 before weights and diets you body will change a lot between now and then nothing wrong with eating well though. I not been doing it long and I'm 20. Enjoy some junk food for a few years first!

It will be extremely difficult to add weight at that age. I could eat a field of live cows and still be a streak. At 32, I'm now 6'3" and 16 stone. Age has affected my weight, not diet. But then that's just me and he is he. Stick with complex carbs, high protein and lift as heavy as you can.

Hey it's fine that we disagree mate, the world would be boring if everyone held the same opinions. :)

As far as i'm concerned you are never too young to be eating healthy foods. Eating rice, pasta, lean meat etc. is far better for you than junk food regardless of your age. That doesn't mean you have to follow a specific eating plan at the age of 15 but swapping out the crips and rubbish for complex carbs, protein and good fats is in my opinion a good thing.

As for weight lifting, well I didn't actually recommend that he start lifting. I was referring purely to his diet. However all recent studies have shown the old myth that "lifting weights throughout pubery is bad for you" to be false. Doctors now actually recommend it to young teenagers with certain bone conditions.

Would I recommend he start lifting? No, but I wouldn't recommend against it either. If he wants to do it then as long as he takes the same precautions the rest of us do then he should be fine. I'm sure there will be many here who disagree but i'm going by the scientific studies not the old wives-tales about lifting at young ages. I honestly wish I had started in my teens. :p

Hey Gordy that fine mate, I respect you posts and you clearly know your stuff, as I said I have your thread bookmarked.

He just said in his 1st post that he wants to 'pile pounds on' and I think at 15 he should just eat normal healthy food, no 15 year old should have to mess about with putting weight on.... or off, I used to weigh 18 stone at 15 years old - before going up to 23 stone at age 21.. I’m now down to 15.4 stone, which was and is the hardest thing ever, i have learnt and my advice to anyone under 18 is wait!!!

let your body develop how it wants to before you start any form of 'diet' or weights, just play sport and eat well... and yeah have the odd burger and pizza while you can get away with it! :)

I actually agree with the above completely. I think going all out to gain weight at the age of 15 is unnecessary. I don't think it would do any harm as long as he did it properly but I agree with you that at his age he doesn't really need to. I definately do think he should avoid junk food and stick to complex carbs and protein etc. If he gets in to the habit of eating properly now then by the time he is 18-19 he will likely find his physique has developed nicely anyway and with minimum amounts of fat.

I was just trying to encourage him to eat healthy foods really. :)

now mate! what am i gonna do about my jelly gut!

like i said i have lost almost 8 stone in 4 years, hard work and missing out on a heck of nice food :( - but can't shift my jelly gut, i have lost more weight but my face goes gaunt and i look ill :( - much diffirent to all these diet about today.

I have tree trunk legs that most body builders would like! but my top half is saggy and slack, so working on my arms with dumbells until my gym card comes in, any advice is welcome mate

Jim

joined the gym, waiting for my card to come through, struggle with food real bad and lost all my weight following slimming world 'green days' which is pretty much carbs only!

Now I look back, I would KILL to have someone like Gordy tell me what to eat when I was that age...

Seriously....

If he lets his body go along naturally, like many other 15 year olds..He will be fat, unhealthy and well on the way to heart disease..

Eating healthy for the win...If only id known it back then :/
