basically been asked how to resolve this by a freind, and im not able to actually go take a look at it myself.

all did work correctly, but recently he cant open any powerpoint or adobe files. if he clicks on the file in explorer, it previews correct on the details section, but if you doubleclicks the file, it brings up a dialogue box asking him what format he would like to convert it to, gives a few choises, and no matter what you choose it brings it up in an unreadable format, almost like acsii code. this happen with any pdf of ppt file.

word, notepad work fine. hes removed adobe and reinstalled with no luck, all regional options and input locales are correct, adobe and powerpoint are set to english.

anybody got any idea what hes done or whats gone south?

no, the correct program actually loads, its just that it displays it in this weird format, gobbled txt instead of the pdf/ppt file :(

unsure the title of the dialogue box, but i think it says 'convert' or similar at the top.
