Just got myself an Apache for my heat-sink, in the bios (Asrock z68 extreme4) I turned the CPU fan to automatic, with a target of 50deg and a fan target of 1.

In my mind that should mean the fan will crank up to full 1300rpm when under load and going over 50, but when under 50 it should spin down to 600rpm.

Problem is, that the fan will not spin down under 1000rpm even when the cpu temp is only 30deg.

Any ideas guys?

Maybe pop it up to 60 and see what difference you get.

PWM isn't so much about a digital change from on to off but more about subtle changes to the fan speed as temperature rises.

Anyway at 24% my Apache black spins at 808RPM. The lowest I can set it with my graphics card PWM is 20% and it spins at 753RPM. It spins at 1000rpm while the duty cycle is 39%.

Speedfan can work more like you want. There may even be an option in your BIOS.

On my gigabyte with easytune 6 I get a minimum of 250-300rpm at 30C ramping to max at 50C however this never goes above 1150rpm.

Oddly I have a similar thing going on with the same mobo. The one thing I've noticed with my i5 is it loves the temperature! Fan never seems to spin down much. I wonder if its a slgiht niggle with the bios itself?
