Hi guys, Ive installed some corsair sp120 elite fans. Now do i have to adjust the speeds or leave the speeds which is defaulted from motherboard?. My other question is on the bios my fans are defaulted as dc mode. However im sure my fans are pwm? Does this matter or should i change my fan settings to pwm? And is there any particular speeds if i was to do so im supposed to adjust them too? Or is it down to preference of how loud the fans are? Im still learning all this so please excuse the lack of pc knowledge.

If there pwn fans then set them to that in the bios to give you more control, you have 2 choices let the motherboard default the fan settings or set a custom fan curve.

Its your preference depending on speed and noise and temps.

If you connected the fans to a 3-pin header they'll be running DC. If you connected them to a 4-pin header, you'll be safe to change the fan setting PWM.

Yeah connected via 4 pin headers, i did breifly change to pwm, but the fans got louder and faster, is this becuase more power goes through pwm? Or is this where i need to adjust fan curve? Although im not very familiar with the right speeds for certain temps etc. Is there any kinda recommended line to follow? Am i over thinking all of this?

They'll have got louder and faster due to the default setting of the mobo, so you would need to adjust the fan curve to make them quieter. Everyone's situation is different, it depends on number of fans, case airflow, even the environment the computer is sat in to name a few. You could always tweak the fan curve and monitor temperatures. If it get's too hot, change them back.

DC is a constant current, so the fans will always spin at the same RPM regardless of the system. PWM reacts to the temperatures of the system (usually the CPU core temp), and adjusts the RPM accordingly.

I have a Lian li o11 dynamic.

I put in 6 case fans which run off the same PWM hub which then feeds into the CPU fan on the motherboard via one single pwm connection.

I then have an AIO cooler that runs independently.

Anyway, where I am going is the motherboard just thinks all 6 of my fans are just 1, and then it's easy to set a custom curve based on CPU temp.

I'm pretty sure you can do the same if they are all indepently connected also, I set mine up in the motherboard bios this is on a MSI x570 board.

I can't remember my exact profile but I prefer to keep things cool over noise so I think anything over 50c is 100% fan speed, then tapers down depending on temperature.

It won't get above 50c unless I'm gaming, then almost always have headphones on so don't hear it anyway.
