Mobo = Gigabyte P35 DS3R rev1
RAM = Crucial Ballistix PC2-5300

The Gigabyte offical site says that the mobo is compatible with the E8400 but I have a vague memory of reading a post saying their's didn't work. Anyone have the same mobo and one of the newer Wolfdale cpu's?

Upgrading from E2160, overclock doesn't seem to hold for very long these days after 6 months of battering it.

It should be ok providing you have updated to a compatible BIOS (F11 onwards).

Mine had F6a when I first got it, already flashed to F11 now, straight after I ordered it :)

I'll put a few different BIOS updates on a flash drive just in case anyway.

Got it and installed, all very straightforward, forgot to change the voltage in BIOS for a few minutes after I first restarted the PC and was wondering why my temps were so high at idle and stock (mid 50's) :p.

Anyway everything seems ok now.

temps and voltage (set at 1.0125 in BIOS)

My e2160 used to idle at those load temps (mid 50's) so I'm happy and looking forward to overclocking :)

Would be very interested in any gaming benchmarks/comparisons you have between the 2 CPUs. What was your e2160 overclocked to ? Been looking at getting either an e7200 or e8400 but can never convince myself that many of my games will run much better

I used to overclock the 2160 to 3ghz, and I don't really notice much difference in performance with the 8400 in real terms.

Wish I'd thought of doing that before swapping the cpu's in the first place :rolleyes: I may get around to swapping the cpu's again to run some timedemo's or something but don't hold your breath ;)

I mainly upgraded because I liked the thought of not having to worry too much about temperatures anymore as the wolfdales run on much lower voltage and it's been 6 months since I last bought anything for the computer :)

edit: watercooling for cpu in a month or so, so I can get a nice 4GHz+ overclock too :)
