Ran CPU-Z wrongly thinking it would show me the temp of my chips and although i was wrong about that, it shows my processor as Q6600 fine but in the clocks section shows core speed of 1.6gig. Is that right? x6 multi and 267bus.

2.4gig chip is 1.6? or am i reading it wrong somehow.

run prime or a game, and you will get 2400mhz, its just the speedstep thing to save energy when the proccessing power isnt needed.

should be some kind of sticky on this. I don't blame people with new-builds being shocked with low ****mhz but it get gets asked a lot

something like "new core2 CPU reporting much lower MHz than it should be? read here first"

Most wouldn't see or read it.

I'm surprised that the people that post on the forums wouldn't know this already. I mean I read a fair chunk of tech news - and I knew about this maybe 4 years ago, as it was a feature of my S754 A64.

I only started posting again since doing my new build recently, althoughi am on the forum a lot anyway it tended to stay in the graphics card section keeping eye on latest things lol.

Sorry if the question is asked a lot. I am seeing people saying to turn off the speed stepping but is that a good recommendation or should i just leave it on as it will use the extra juice when i need it?

Does it adversely affect an overclock as will be looking to start on my oc over the weekend.

Thanks for the replies anyhow guys, was quite worrying at the time, especially as i was convinced i had crushed my chip when put my tuniq tower on :)

best to leave it enabled. I find myself running at 6x multiplier 75% of the time - it pushes to 9x under load when working or the occassional game.
