im a bit of an overclocking noob but have managed to get my Q6600 to 3.2GHZ stable. I've putted the FSB to 378, however when running Prime95 one of the core fails within a few minutes. I've done 3D Mark 06 and vantage which complete ok. my question is, is it safe to leave the processor at 3.4GHZ even though its not stable?

Assuming you have proper cooler, try this:

FSB 380
PCIE-E 101
FSB strap 333
Dram Freq 761
Mem timing (put what it says on the sticker on your memory)
vCore 1.4
DRAM (put what it says on the sticker on your memory)
NB 1.30
FSB Term 1.30
CPU PLL 1.50

And use intelburntest try 5 test first and watch for the temp, if it pass, try 10 test and if pass take a bit of vCore and test again, if it fail, put up vCore by 2 notch depend on your temp

fails on intelburntest and prime95 within 2 seconds of starting the test.
