hi guys

just built my new rig

Asus P5Q deluxe
quad Q6600
tuniq tower
GTX 260
4gb black dragon 6400
550w power supply

its at 54c at idle in the bios !!!

tuniq looks like its seated properly
and also as soon as i try to run a boot cd
no go just black screen !!
will not let me alter any cpu variables in the bios either !

any ideas?

thanks

Very very little load though, near enough to idle.
And it does sound too high. I would unseat and re-seat the tuniq. Look on the base and see if the thermal paste has been applied correctly. You should see an even spread around the base. You did only put a tiny bit on didnt oyu?

My q6600 is at 43,43,35,38 idle, running at stock. However it is under only a scythe mini in a lian li v350 SFF sized case without much of an intake grill for airflow.

Load temps are into the high 60's running prime, previously tried overclocking it and at 3ghz I was reaching 78 load temps :(

I too am wondering if this is how high the chips usually should be?
Guess I'll try a re-seat of the heatsink and re-do the Arctic Silver, I could try lapping the heatspreader but I don't really want to void the warranty yet.

all fans are spinning tuniq is cool to the touch
grain sized articsilver 5 blob in middle

i will remove the tuniq and reseat check the spread of the paste at same time

thank guys

ps
anybody know what the usall bios temp for a Q6600 is with a tuniq on full ??

I would install a Windows temp monitoring app like SpeedFan before assuming that temp is correct. My Abit IP35 Pro increased the CPU temps by over 10C when I updated the BIOS a while back. SpeedFan is more accurate on mine and around about the temps the BIOS used to say before I upgraded.

This. Relying on BIOS temp is pointless, you should use Windows monitors, Core Temp, Real Temp, Everest, SpeedFan etc..

Indeed. Get some load temps from a Win-based utility.

These chips can cope with pretty high temps - most will still be running OK at 90c. Even so, it can't do much for the lifespan of the chip, and if your chip's that hot it might well mean that your chipset, power regulators etc. are very hot as well. I'd say you need to improve your cooling if the quad goes above 70-75c at full load. High idle temps alone aren't really too much to worry about.

How is your case cooling? These chips do put out a lot of heat, and getting the heat away from the CPU is only half the battle!

If the tuniq is cool to touch i would think the BIOS reading is most likely wrong. Every ASUS board i have had usually with early BIOS's always read very high or very low. Usually a BIOS update corrects this. Also when your in the BIOS the temps are usually higher than in windows.

Have you tried core temp or everest and see what the actual core temps are?. The core temps are far more important.

thank you for all the replys
now checking using core temp and everest ulltimate.

reseated the tuniq looks no diffrent BUT idle now 28c :)

full load 41/40/38/37 all 4 cores @ stock under prime 95

however that is only running just CPU stress !!

will not run any mixed/blended stress tests !!!!

my memory is GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Black Dragon

i have not changed anything in the bios yet still learning new board P5Q deluxe

any ideas !!!

What is the question? Are you saying that you get an error or something if you try to run the mixed/blend tests?

Try running it with only 2GB of ram slotted in the motherboard, if it passes then you will have to up the mch volts in the bios when using 4GB of ram, as some motherboards require the extra voltage for 4GB.
