Looking to buy my second Q6600 platform to replacing a dead server.

Now my question? With Overclockers selling processors gauranteed to run at whatever speed. What are the odds when you buy the standard one you get what's left after they have tested all the processors? Are we stuck with the one that donr clock well or have a high voltage?

most Q6600 seem to happily go to 3ghz without any voltage increase (or at least minimal change), mine is in a shuttle at stock volts and haven't bought a guaranteed cpu

Would that actually be legal? For a shop to test them all and only sell the bad ones for the lower price without actually stating that it perhaps doesn't clock as high/easily

none of the Q6600 are tested, when you buy an "overclocked" one you recieve instructions as to how to overclock it... if it wont reach the clock you brought they will replace it... given that 99.9% of Q6600 will do 3.2ghz on a decent motherboard its a good bet that you wont be returning it to them

Bearing in mind that CPUs are generally only guaranteed by Intel to run at their stock speeds and it only being the extra priced ones guaranteed by Overclockers I highly doubt its illegal. It's only illegal if they test them and repackage the duff ones and still sell them as new.

I have a Q6600 and I know has a pretty high voltage before starting to overclock. But I can get it to run at 3.6ghz. I think it's standard volt is 1.325v.

Just wondering how and where OC get their CPU from that say sell "Gauranteed to @ ?ghz". I assume it's is probably right that it's ilegal to test them then sell them on when they now no longer new.

If the the new chip is a lower voltage it might go into my desktop and that CPU move into the new server.

They are just standard CPU's, nothing special.

OCUK charges to extra to carry the risk of you returning one or more CPU's for not running at the specified speed as they would need to sell these at B-Grade.

Personally I'd buy a stock one and if it didn't clock well dispose of it via auction or in the members market. Though with recent price rises ... that could be a more risky option than it used to be.

Well it arrived and after pulling out the old one and putting in the new one. I have not what seems like got a better CPU.

Old CPU VID : 1.3125v
New CPU VID : 1.3v

This is high considering what others are getting surely?

i got mins yesterday and its 1.1625vin according to core temp

its currently overclocked at 3.3ghz @1.35 volts

with temps in the low 50s at full load

think i was very lucky i could go higher i think i could easy hit 3.6 but i dont want up the voltage too much on this little gem

its the lowest reading ya can get apparantly

Thanks... you just made my day!! :(

I always seem to get average to sh!t processors! Now you processor would do weell under my water cooling system. Probably 4ghz nicely.

I dout it.. 1.35v for 3.3ghz is average as far as Q6600 have gone over their lifetime (1.35v on average for a Q6600 gives you a clock of 3.2 - 3.35ghz ish) although good for a recent one

See yours is at 4ghz on air. What the VID on that one and what voltage you have it for 4ghz?

Firstly everyone should remember that VID is not the only thing that makes a good clocker.. indeed lower VID CPU tend to run hotter at higher clocks.. you should also be looking at the batch number of the CPU, which is also a good indication of how well it will clock.

My CPU has a VID of 1.2625v which means nothing really as it will do 3.2ghz @ 1.23v, it is however from the L737B batch which is best early Q6600 overclocking batch.

To give you some idea of what a 4ghz Q6600 does at different clocks these are clocks and 8 hour primestable load vcore in windows:

3.2ghz @ 1.23v, 3.6ghz @ 1.34v, 3.75ghz@ 1.42v, 3.825ghz @ 1.48v, 4.023ghz @ 1.53v

You might want to take a look at: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10096086&postcount=3

Also you want to keep in mind that the VID posted by robert.brookes@ I suspect is with speedstep enabled... hense why it is so low
