My parts for my new machine arrived yesterday, spec being;

Q6600 (1466FSB) Core2Quad
Abit IP35 Pro
4GB OCZ 8500 Reaper HPC
4850 512 (Powercolor)
3x Seagate 250GB (16mb) HD's @3gb/s in Raid 5.

After getting it running today, I decided to attempt the overclock that OCUK recommended, being 368FSB.

I had some initial problems, after forgetting to change the DDR/CPU ratio. I upped the voltage to 1.5v during this time, it probably would have been fine at around 1.46v though, I'd imagine, as CPU-Z is reporting around 1.46 anyway.

The ram is running at 900 and something (Seemed to be 800 and something with default settings)

Whilst the predicted clock speed was 3.3ghz, windows is actually reporting a clock speed of nearly 3.5ghz -Idling at around 30c, 30% average load gives 40-45c, and 100% load for 3 minutes maxed out at 51c.

Firstly: Is there a reason why it's actually clocked to 3.5ghz? Is there some random factor here?

Secondly: Would it be worth attempting to take the clock higher? The temps seem very respectable, but then everything is new, I imagine once a little bit of dust has circulated around the system, and fans have begun to wear, this figure will rise slightly.

Third: Can I take the ram higher? Is it worth it?

Lastly but not least. My 4850, can it be clocked any higher? I understand they can get quite hot, are there any worthy upgrades available as far as cooling is concerned. I have enough space to use a dual slot cooler, if it would be worth doing so.

I'm by no means clueless when it comes to such a subject as overclocking, I understand the principles, however, having no experience, and knowing nothing about the current hardware range (The last time I built a PC was a 3500+ which was on pre-order, I left it alone once it was built, and over clocked very slightly)

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've included a screenshot of CPU-Z, if it'd make anything clearer

Well 386 x 9 = 3474. So that works out where it should be.

But stress test it before taking it any higher.

The memory will probably do atleast 1100mhz. But don't worry about it til you get your CPU overclock sorted out.

No idea about the 4850 tho.

Heh, that's why, it was supposed to be at 468 - Done me a favour though. :)

I used HotCPU for about 3 minutes, before getting bored, and gave it a good blast on UT3, without a hitch. I'll let HotCPU complete when the novelty of the new PC has worn off, and make an attempt on taking it higher.

468 fsb would give you 4.374GHz CPU Clock speed with a x9 multiplier
That would not even boot

even if you dropped the multi to 8x that would be a cpu clock of 3.774Ghz which is still outta range for a q6600.

you should be aiming for 3.6Ghz MAX on air (400 x 9 or 450 x 8) but most chips will only do 3.0Ghz to 3.2Ghz

What I meant was, It should be 368, and I set it at 386, which would account for the higher clock speed than expected. I'm just going to tweak it some more.

2 Hours with HotCPU running, no errors, and max temp of 56c. ([email protected])

Can anyone shed any light on my GPU questions?

Now running at 2.7ghz, on same ram multiplier, ram is now at just under 1000mhz, can't get an accurate idle because speedstep is enabled. But it's still maxing out at 57c under 100% load.

I presume due to the same voltage being used.

What's the max voltage for these chips?
