Just brought a Q6600 of MM to replace a dual core - thought as I was only changing the CPU and not the mobo I could just swap them over and Vista would carry on - nope getting black screen on boot.

Have reformatted the drive, now getting the same thing on re-install - any ideas. Hangs on the re-install, hangs on re-boot during install. I am out of ideas - anyone else got any?

Are you sure you mean either the CPU or that mobo, since that mobo only supports AMD socket 939 chips  I'm also even more confused if you have fitted the CPU in the socket

nope, just checked, definitely a DFI CFX 3200 INTEL, replaced a 2180 in it. On this re-boot it just locked up, mouse went dead and screen showing (this time) the scrolling green bar which is frozen!! I'm going mad!

Have you tried removing the CMOS battery to 100% clear your BIOS? If not try this then flash to the latest BIOS version.

That's good, I'm not the only one :p

:D

its at the latest bios, will remove the battery and try again, just trying another hdd to be sure its not my kit - seems to start installing ok, but the either hangs during it or on initial reboot - checked temps and all good so unsure what it could be!

I'm just trying to, again flash to latest bios, but, as always, no disk drive where I need it - looks like I'll have to install the old cpu, re-install windows, flash bios again, change cpu - what a git!!

Downloaded the bios from dfi - doesnt fit on a bootable floppy!!!!! giving up tonight - nothing going right and gf now annoyed with me spending all ebening on computer! what a day!!

Thanks for all you help with this, there wasnt a post error, it would just lock up when installing windows - I have sorted it now by reflashing the bios (for a 3rd time) and removing one of the hdd.

I'm now tring to install the evaluation download of windows 7, vista x64 went ok on one hdd, but when I disconnect that one, put the new one in and try to install windows 7 it keeps looking for drivers (no ideas which one, think its the dvd rom) - would like to install from a usb stick but cant get that to work either - any ideas?

all up and running now, got windows 7 on one hdd, and vista 64 on another - anyone know of a way to make it ask me which drive to boot from - I can do it each time by pressing escape and selecting the boot device but would prefer it gave me the time (I used to know how to do it, but have forgotten!)

You have probably over written something in the boot.ini when installing Win 7. Download something called, easyBCD creator and use that to fix the issue :)
