Q6600 botleneck with a 570gtx??

Hi

I've just installed a new Asus 570 gtx and I seem to have a pretty severe bottleneck somewhere.

Coming from a 3870x2, which I have totally removed with driver cleaner, I am only getting 15400 on 3dMark05... which is actually 100 odd points less than with the 3870x2... ooops :)

How much of an impact will have running a stock q6600 have? (running at just 2.4ghz) Its all watercooled bar the card, so I've had it past 3g before, but didn't realise it would have that much of an impact??

I cant clock it at the mo as my stupid bluetooth keyboard cant get me onto bios during boot, so I will be 'lending' a keyboard from work tomorrow

Or am I missing something else?

Cheers

Q6600 at stock is a massive bottleneck to a GTX570 - 3gig is minimum to get decent performance out of it. Also don't use 3D Marks 05 and 06 as any kinda guide they are generally CPU limited and don't really make best use of the latest card either.

What card do you have muterobert?

Cant really be bothered to do a full system upgrade at the moment, so logically, what can I expect from a p35 board and a q6600 clocked to 3Ghz, with 4gb of memory (8000 stuff, G Skill)

cmsbfent : go look though the forums and check what other people benchmarks are with the same gfx card. Do the same benchmark yourself and find out what the differnce is. I very much doubt there will be a large differnce. It never hurts to overclock your Q6600 to at least 3 gig tho ;)

dude i shall run 3d mark 11 and post back here, spec in sig.

i ran a quick unigine run too (see official 570 thread).

EDIT - seems 3d mark 11 is a little borked? just wont run. i have only done a mild overclock on the card and unigine runs fine on continuous loop - i think there might be a patch for 3d mark.

Heres my quick unigine run

Just realised I'm still on Vista on the rig with the 570. I use it for work and some CAD packages dont sit well with the aero thing on Windows 7. That gonna cause some problems you think?

Sorry, meant to say a GTX 580. I too am on a P35 based mobo, push your FSB as far as your RAM will take it. Memory bandwidth and extra clocks

Put simply, this machine will chew up anything I throw at it right now. Short of some Metro 2033 segments (Adv. DoF notwithstanding) and 3D Mark 2011, I have rarely felt the system is pushed at all. I just finished Black Ops (Maxed @ 1080p) and there was (no exaggeration) not a single scene that wasn't silky smooth.

To be clear, I also have the 580 clocked to 930/2200 and it still scales the more the GPU clocks are pushed. This to me indicates minimal CPU bottleneck. I also I have the beneft of a 120Hz monitor for V-Sync unlockage etc.

Thanks muterobert

Good to hear

I've defo got something strange going on though. I'd say at the moment its looking worse than with my 3870x2. Black Ops certainly seems choppier, and it was pretty bad before. Hmmmm

Gonna grab a copy of win7 tomorrow and format to see if it helps. Cant seem to get directx11 running which I assume is due to running vista?

Yup, should have done a bit more research :) but I fancied a change

Out of interest, what do you get on 3dMark05, 06, and vantage?

Thanks

cmsbfent

vista is dx11 capable should be no problem with that in theory.

don't use 3dmark 05 because it's completely cpu limited an will show you about same result with any card.

overclock your cpu to 3.4Ghz

As Rroff says, stock Q6600 will suck. You really need to get it to at least 3Ghz, if not 3.2Ghz to do that 570 justice. You can do this on an air cooler, you don't 'need' watercooling to achieve these clocks :-)

Wont the cpu just be a problem for cpu intensive games if a problem at all? Does this whole cpu bottleneck really exsist to the extent that massive gains/losses are reported in games due to the cpu speed/cores or is this just all about the benckmark score :)

I have read so many threads about a cpu being a bottleneck in games and have seen some really interesting benchmarks to suggest it is all ******** :)

If anyone can point any gaming bench marks to suggest other wise please post as i am interested in this topic with having an e6850 and looking to stick a 5870 in with it :)

Back again :)

Well, I've formatted and installed windows 7 and things are looking better. Still a bit behind on scores, but how does this sound:

3DMARK 11: 4084

UNIGINE:
---------
FPS: 49.9
Scores: 1257
Min FPS: 34.7
Max FPS: 115.3

Thats on directx 11, on the default settings (the same as the ones shown in Naan image above)

Default card speeds, and a q6600 running at 2.4Ghz

Sound about right? Just had a quick go of mafia 2 and its running well, and am about to install black ops

Cheers

Try benching a few games with your cpu @ 2.4, then enter bios and set fsb to 333 (3.0ghz) and try the same runs with the faster speed.

Hey guys! fist post on this forum :P, if any of you are running q6600 @ 2.4 & GTX570 & if you got metro 2033 will you plz check the fps you get for me, cause i cant find the bottle neck on my PC, RAM highest ever seen in any game is about 60% and metro averages on about 30 -40 % CPU usage.

So can a CPU bottleneck a PC system even if its not used 100%?

metro(very high - DX11- MSAA4) i get -28 -32 fps(Artyom's room in start base) and in action it drops to about 19FPS... but strangely even though with the low fps the game NEVER lags.

The reason I'm looking for a bottle neck is other benchmarks I have seen of metro the 570 gets about 48 fps average on same settings as mine(I think). 20 fps drop?

3D Mark Vantage: 19800 ???:( other review benchmarks get 26 - 27 k +

Heaven Benchmark v2.1
FPS:
50.3
Scores:
1267
Min FPS:
16.7
Max FPS:
115.3

@cmsbfent our heaven score is almost identical. I'm impressed in the hardware's consistency. PS, I really want to hear what fps you get in metro.

I just got my 570 on Tuesday(Had a XFX 285GTX Black Edition)... was a little bit disappointed at the results but I think the rest my system is getting too old...
